Microsoft is introducing new artificial intelligence video effects designed to make video calls on Windows 11 more engaging and collaborative. These special effects can be achieved through devices equipped with neural processing units (NPUs), such as eye contact and voice focus. This means they will first appear on devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, such as the new Lenovo ThinkPad X13s powered by the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3.

Actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of such AI-driven video effects. Specifically, the Eye Contact feature was first shown in late 2019 with the Surface Pro X, also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and began rolling out in 2020. This feature makes it appear that the user is always facing the camera, even if they are looking down to read something.

Microsoft appears to be expanding the scope of these artificial intelligence capabilities. In addition to eye contact, there's a new auto-framing feature that allows the camera on your PC to follow you if you move around, so others can still see you. Additionally, use the soft blur effect to create a natural-looking bokeh effect during video calls. A new audio feature is Voice Focus, which removes background noise so you sound clearer during calls. Microsoft said there's "more" coming, but didn't elaborate.

Windows 11 正在为视频通话获得新的 AI 效果,从 Arm 设备开始

#You don’t need to worry about whether a specific app supports these features because they’re built right into Windows 11. These tools work with any software that supports video calling, and you don't have to reset them every time you use a new app that requires them. Additionally, since they are powered by a dedicated NPU, these features do not impact the overall performance of other components such as the CPU or GPU.

Some of these smart features are also implemented by OEMs, such as HP, which has been touting automatic framing and other improvements on many of its laptops this year. Eliminating the need for companies to develop their own technology to implement these features, they should be built directly into Windows 11.

Still unsure when the video effects will appear on Windows 11 devices with Intel or AMD drivers. In fact, we don't know when they'll show up on Snapdragon-powered devices either - we just know they'll be available there first.
