Windows 11 Dev build 22538 fixes Explorer.exe crash and improves voice access

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22538 to the Dev Channel. In it, Microsoft updated Voice Access, a new feature (debuting in build 22518) that lets you control your PC entirely with your voice. Insiders will also be happy to see that an issue with Explorer.exe crashing when using hardware volume controls has also been fixed, plus there are more fixes added to this release, which you can check out below.

Voice Access Update

Voice Access is in Build Introduced in 22518. Voice Access is a new experience in controlling your PC using just your voice. In today's build, there are some voice access updates for Windows Insiders to try.

Use the touch keyboard for voice access

You can use the touch keyboard with voice access:

  • Spell words such as names and email addresses.
  • Enter numbers, such as phone numbers and addresses.

  • Fixed an issue where the command "lowercase previous character" was not working as expected.
  • Fixed an issue where Voice Access would give an error message saying "Voice Access wakes up" even when no microphone is connected.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Switch to Edge" command did not prompt for input when two Microsoft Edge windows were open, one of which was maximized.
  • Fixed an issue where the command "Go to Font" was not giving the expected results in Microsoft Word.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Wake for Voice Access" command did not activate the Voice Access microphone when you spoke continuously without any pauses.

  • Fixed an issue where the command "show numbers" was not displaying number labels on the focused window.

[Task Manager]

  • Fixed an issue affecting the reliability of Task Manager.
  • Updated the App History tab column name in Task Manager from "Tile Updates" to "Notifications".

Note: Some of the fixes mentioned here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into servicing updates for released versions of Windows 11 that will become generally available on October 5, 2021 .
