Windows 11 gets smart clipboard and action features

The upcoming Windows 11 update, also known as version 22H2 or Sun Valley 2, will introduce support for Smart Clipboard, which will provide a new way to paste content between applications.

Currently, Windows 11 comes with a Clipboard History panel. It currently allows you to manage copied text or media, emojis, and GIFs. With Smart Clipboard, Microsoft wants to add apps as actions.

We don’t have details yet, but this feature will not be part of the existing clipboard panel and will have its own keyboard shortcut. Additionally, you can manage the new clipboard panel from Settings.

This new clipboard panel will be bundled with another related feature called Smart Actions.

With the new Smart Clipboard and Smart Actions, you'll be able to copy and paste rich content directly in apps like Outlook.

This may be one of the biggest changes in Windows 11.

Based on what is copied, Windows 11 will suggest actions for the application to take. For example, if you copy your email address, Windows 11 will recommend the Outlook app.

You can click the suggested action to paste the content into the Outlook application.

In the latest preview build, we found references to the following experimental flags:

• Smart Printing
• Smart Signal Registration

Microsoft will use machine learning to recommend apps based on the tasks you perform.

Currently, it’s unclear when the feature will debut, but it’s likely to be announced at Microsoft’s hybrid work event in April 2022.

During the event, Microsoft plans to give people a glimpse into the future of hybrid work with Windows. The event is titled "Windows Powers the Future of Hybrid Work," so the company will likely discuss Windows 11 Smart Actions features.

In addition to Windows 11, Microsoft is expected to bring new productivity, security and other features to Microsoft 365.

Other improvements to Windows Clipboard

Smart Clipboard isn’t the only new clipboard feature in Windows. As part of its efforts to help users further personalize their desktop experience, Microsoft is bringing 13 new themes to input panels like the clipboard, text input experiences including IME and voice input.
