Obscura 3 camera app gets overhauled interface and new shooting modes

Alternative iPhone camera app Obscura 3 introduces several new camera features and a thorough design aimed at making its various photography tools more accessible.

In the newly designed interface, the control wheel of the previous version has been replaced by a completely gesture-based control system with tactile feedback, which the developers say improves single-thumb control. And provides users with the closest feeling to using a real DSLR camera on a smartphone.

Like previous versions, Obscura 3 allows users to shoot in multiple formats such as RAW, HEIC, JPEG, Live Photo and Portrait mode, but the way to control the modes has changed.

The new app is built on Apple’s latest camera hardware and features Pro, Pro Photo, Depth, Live Photo and Video modes. The default Pro Photo mode uses only one camera at a time, with manual control over focus, white balance, shutter speed and ISO.

Pro Mode uses the iPhone's dual or triple camera system, with fast zooming between lenses at the expense of more manual control. All modes offer various shooting options via a gear icon, which when pressed displays a horizontal scroll of settings below the viewfinder.

Obscura camera features also offer flash control, grid, shutter time and level, while an improved dedicated library browser includes pre-built albums such as tagging and starring, which allows users to apply filters and easily Edit, share, copy, favorite, hide, delete and discard their photos.

The app also includes three themes, multiple app icon choices, light and dark modes, and a companion Apple Watch app that can remotely trigger the iPhone shutter.
