Which new framework should you learn this year? Is it time to give up my CMS? If I want to expand my website to millions of users, what tools should I choose? The 2021 Jamstack Community Survey will answer these and more.
Netlify has conducted a Jamstack community survey over the past two years to better understand our growing community of developers – insights that inform our services and help developers learn from each other. Our survey data provides the meaning of best practices, as well as the concept of other things that are happening in the community.
What we've seen this year: Now is the best time for developers in the Jamstack community! Jamstack has become mainstream and the ecosystem is thriving. Jamstack is becoming the default choice for web developers at all career stages, regions and industries, and the community is growing larger. We also saw a significant increase in the number of middle school students in the community last year, which bodes well for the growing ecosystem.
In 2021, Netlify received more than 7,000 responses to the Jamstack community survey. This is more than double the number of responses we received in 2020, confirming the growth of the Jamstack community.
Here are some highlights of our more technical discoveries…
32% of Jamstack developers are building websites for audiences of millions of users, but the tools and development priorities they use vary: for example, they are more likely to specialize in front-end or back-end work, and they are more likely to see mobile devices as their primary goal.
For 55% of developers, JavaScript is their primary language. But TypeScript is coming from behind and its share continues to grow.
In terms of design tools, more than 60% of survey respondents use Figma and are more satisfied with the users of any other design tools we asked about.
In terms of usage and satisfaction, React continues to top the main framework rankings, and Next.js continues to grow and grow. But we also see growth and higher satisfaction from the challenger framework Vue.
WordPress remains a clear leader in content management systems, but it is not considered a standalone solution. When used in a headless configuration, user reports satisfaction is much higher. It's a breakthrough year for other headless CMSs like Sanity and Strapi.
