How to Effectively Eliminate Whitespace Between HTML Elements?

How to Ignore Whitespace in HTML

HTML and CSS often present challenges when managing whitespace, particularly when placing multiple elements side-by-side. By default, browsers render spaces and line breaks between HTML elements. This can lead to unwanted gaps in layouts.

CSS White-Space Property

CSS offers the white-space property to control whitespace handling. One of its values is collapse, which collapses consecutive whitespace characters. However, only FireFox supports this value.

CSS white-space-collapse Property

Alternatively, the white-space-collapse property was proposed to strictly ignore all types of whitespace, regardless of browser implementation. However, no browser currently implements this feature.

Using Comments

A workaround is to use HTML comments to visually remove whitespace while maintaining it for the browser. This involves wrapping your images or other elements within comment tags, as follows:

<p>
  <!--
    <img src="image.jpg" alt="Image 1" />
    <img src="image.jpg" alt="Image 2" />
    <img src="image.jpg" alt="Image 3" />
    <img src="image.jpg" alt="Image 4" />
  -->
</p>
