Why Does My Context Menu Appear Behind the Button in IE7?

IE7 Z-Index Issue for Context Menu

Problem Statement:

In IE7, a context menu (ul) appears below the button it's associated with, hiding the menu. This behavior differs from other browsers due to the browser's unique handling of stacking contexts.

Analysis:

The CSS used for the button and menu positions these elements using relative and absolute positioning, respectively. However, in IE7, the nearest positioned ancestor (in this case, the "control-action" div) determines the stacking context. This means that the menu's z-index (10000) is not taken into account, and the menu is positioned below the button.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, the order of the HTML elements can be modified as such:

<div class="control-action">
  <ul>
Copy after login

By placing the button after the ul, the button becomes the nearest positioned ancestor, establishing a new stacking context. Consequently, the z-index of the menu (10000) becomes effective, and the menu now appears above the button.
