Introduction This article will explain how the debugger looks in the machine code for the C language functions, variables, and data it needs to convert the C language source code into machine language code.

This is the third article in a series of articles on how the debugger works. You should read Parts 1 and 2 before reading this article.

Debug information

Modern compilers can convert high-level language codes with various indentations or nested program flows and variables of various data types into a lot of 0/1 data called machine code. The only way to do this is The goal is to run the program on the target CPU as quickly as possible. Generally speaking, one line of C language code can be converted into several lines of machine code. Variables are scattered throughout various parts of the machine code, some on the stack, some in registers, or directly optimized away. Data structures and objects don't even "exist" in the machine code. They are just used to store data into the cache according to a certain structural encoding.

So how does the debugger know where the program should stop when you need to pause at the entrance of a certain function? How does it know that when you look at a variable value, how does it find that value? The answer is, debugging information.

The compiler will generate corresponding debugging information when generating machine code. Debugging information represents the relationship between the executable program and the source code, and is stored together with the machine code in a format defined in advance. Over the years, many formats for storing this information have been invented for different platforms and executable files. However, this article is not going to go into the history of these formats, but rather how this debugging information works, so we will focus on something like DWARF. DWARF is now widely used as a debugging format for executable files on Linux and Unix-like platforms.

DWARF in ELF

Analyzing the working principle of the debugger (Part 3): In-depth study of debugging information

According to its Wikipedia description, although DWARF was designed together with ELF (DWARF is an open standard launched by the DWARF Standards Committee. The icon shown above comes from this website.), but DWARF is theoretically also Can be embedded into other executable file formats.

DWARF is a complex format that draws on many years of experience with various architectures and operating system formats. Precisely because it solves the intractable problem of generating debug information for any high-level language on any platform and ABI (Application Binary Interface), it must also be complex. If you want to explain DWARF thoroughly, it is not enough to just go through this thin article. To be honest, I don’t fully understand DWARF down to every tiny detail, so I can’t explain it very thoroughly (if you feel If you are interested, there are some resources at the end of the article that can help you. It is recommended to start with the DWARF tutorial). In this article I will present DWARF in an easy-to-understand way to illustrate how debugging information actually works.

Debug section in ELF file

First let us see where DWARF is located in the ELF file. ELF

Our experiment in this article will use the executable file built from this C language source file and compiled into tracedprog2:

#include <stdio.h>

void do_stuff(int my_arg)、
{
    int my_local = my_arg + 2;
    int i;

    for (i = 0; i
<p>Use the objdump -h command to check the <ruby>section header<rt>section header</rt></ruby> in the ELF executable file. We will see several sections starting with .debug_. These are the debugging of DWARF part. </p>

The first number of each section represents the size of the section, and the last number represents the offset from the start of the section to ELF. The debugger uses this information to read sections from the executable file.

Now let's look at some practical examples of finding useful debugging information in DWARF.

Find function

One of the most basic tasks of the debugger is that when we set a breakpoint at a certain function, the debugger needs to be able to pause at the entry. To do this, some mapping must be established between the function name in the high-level code and the address where the function's instruction starts in the machine code.

In order to obtain this mapping relationship, we can look for the .debug_info section in DWARF. Before we dive in, a little basic knowledge is needed. Each description type in DWARF is called a Debug Information Entry (DIE). Each DIE has tags about its type, properties, etc. DIEs are connected to each other through sibling nodes or child nodes, and the values of attributes can also point to other DIEs.

Run the following command:

objdump --dwarf=info tracedprog2
Copy after login

The output file is quite long. For the sake of convenience, we only focus on these lines (from here on, I will replace useless lengthy information with (...) to facilitate typesetting):

08048604 <do_stuff>:
 8048604:       55           push   ebp
 8048605:       89 e5        mov    ebp,esp

 8048634:       8b 45 f0     mov    eax,DWORD PTR [ebp-0x10]
 8048637:       3b 45 f4     cmp    eax,DWORD PTR [ebp-0xc]

: Abbrev Number: 5 (DW_TAG_subprogram)
       DW_AT_external    : 1
       DW_AT_name        : (...): do_stuff
       DW_AT_decl_file   : 1
       DW_AT_decl_line   : 4
       DW_AT_prototyped  : 1
       DW_AT_low_pc      : 0x8048604
       DW_AT_high_pc     : 0x804863e
       DW_AT_frame_base  : 0x0      (location list)
       DW_AT_sibling     :
 : Abbrev Number: 6 (DW_TAG_formal_parameter)
       DW_AT_name        : (...): my_arg
       DW_AT_decl_file   : 1
       DW_AT_decl_line   : 4
       DW_AT_type        :
       DW_AT_location    : (...)       (DW_OP_fbreg: 0)
 : Abbrev Number: 7 (DW_TAG_variable)
       DW_AT_name        : (...): my_local
       DW_AT_decl_file   : 1
       DW_AT_decl_line   : 6
       DW_AT_type        :
    <a3>   DW_AT_location    : (...)      (DW_OP_fbreg: -20)

因此我们得知 my_local 变量(以 DW_TAG_variable 标签标记)是 do_stuff 函数的局部变量。

对于 my_local 而言,是 DW_OP_fbreg: -20。

do_stuff 函数的 DW_AT_frame_base 属性值为 0x0 (location list)。

$ objdump --dwarf=loc tracedprog2

tracedprog2:     file format elf32-i386

Contents of the .debug_loc section:

    Offset   Begin    End      Expression
    00000000 08048604 08048605 (DW_OP_breg4: 4 )
    00000000 08048605 08048607 (DW_OP_breg4: 8 )
    00000000 08048607 0804863e (DW_OP_breg5: 8 )
    00000000 <end of list>
    0000002c 0804863e 0804863f (DW_OP_breg4: 4 )
    0000002c 0804863f 08048641 (DW_OP_breg4: 8 )
    0000002c 08048641 0804865a (DW_OP_breg5: 8 )
    0000002c <end of list>
</end></end>
Copy after login

08048604 <do_stuff>:
 8048604:       55          push   ebp
 8048605:       89 e5       mov    ebp,esp
 8048607:       83 ec 28    sub    esp,0x28
 804860a:       8b 45 08    mov    eax,DWORD PTR [ebp+0x8]
 804860d:       83 c0 02    add    eax,0x2
 8048610:       89 45 f4    mov    DWORD PTR [ebp-0xc],eax
</do_stuff>
Copy after login

我们回想下,my_local 的 DW_AT_location 属性值为 DW_OP_fbreg: -20。

$ objdump --dwarf=decodedline tracedprog2

tracedprog2:     file format elf32-i386

Decoded dump of debug contents of section .debug_line:

CU: /home/eliben/eli/eliben-code/debugger/tracedprog2.c:
File name Line number Starting address
tracedprog2.c                5           0x8048604
tracedprog2.c                6           0x804860a
tracedprog2.c                9           0x8048613
tracedprog2.c               10           0x804861c
tracedprog2.c                9           0x8048630
tracedprog2.c               11           0x804863c
tracedprog2.c               15           0x804863e
tracedprog2.c               16           0x8048647
tracedprog2.c               17           0x8048653
tracedprog2.c               18           0x8048658
Copy after login

$ dwarf_get_func_addr tracedprog2
DW_TAG_subprogram: 'do_stuff'
low pc  : 0x08048604
high pc : 0x0804863e
DW_TAG_subprogram: 'main'
low pc  : 0x0804863e
high pc : 0x0804865a
Copy after login
