Microsoft Defender now available for Android, Apple iOS and macOS, and Windows

Microsoft Defender is the default security app on Windows and is now available as a standalone solution for mobile operating systems Android and iOS, Apple's macOS operating system, and Windows.

Microsoft Defender for Personal requires a Microsoft 365 subscription: Requires a Microsoft 365 Personal or Home subscription. The new application is based on Microsoft Defender for Endpoint technology, an enterprise-grade security solution.

One important feature is Microsoft Defender for Individuals’ central dashboard. Customers can install the security solution on their devices – except for Linux, as there is currently no Linux version – and all versions can be managed from the dashboard.

Ashwin tested a preview version of Microsoft Defender for Windows in February 2022 and described the device management process as simple and straightforward. In its announcement, Microsoft mentioned Norton and McAfee, two companies that are recognized as third-party security solutions and can view relevant information in the dashboard.

Microsoft Defender for Individuals protects devices from malware and continuously runs antivirus scans on connected devices. Microsoft notes in a footnote that malware protection is not available on Windows and iOS devices if a security solution is installed.

The security solution notifies users in real-time about security changes, such as when a threat is detected on a connected device.

Microsoft 365 subscribers can download Microsoft Defender for Personal from the Microsoft 365 website. Downloadable versions available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices. All download links redirect to the relevant store location, such as Google Play for Android downloads, or the Microsoft Store for Microsoft Defender for Windows Store.
