Safe Mode is apparently the go-to tool for troubleshooting potential hardware and driver issues, but a Windows 11 cumulative update accidentally made the feature unavailable, and Microsoft has finally acknowledged reports on social media and Feedback Hub.

For those who don’t know, Windows Safe Mode disables many drivers and files and is essentially a cracked version of Windows that helps you troubleshoot your operating system easily. Safe mode still comes with a functional file explorer, start menu, and taskbar.

However, Windows 11 KB5012643, an optional update with significant improvements and fixes, breaks Safe Mode and introduces a bug that causes the screen to flash when you boot into Safe Mode, making it Unstable. Windows 11 safe mode reportedly flashes when users open File Explorer, Start menu, taskbar, and other screens.

The issue was discovered immediately after the cumulative update was released and users flagged it in the Feedback Center. Users on Twitter have also noticed the issue, and Microsoft is now rolling out an emergency update to fix the broken Safe Mode.

If you are affected, you will also see logs in the Windows Event Log. The "Shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted" error will appear in the "Winlogon" section.

In a support document, Microsoft said Safe Mode does not work when booted using the "Safe Mode Without Networking" option. Although the company has released an emergency server-side update, if Safe Mode still doesn't work, you should try launching it with networking enabled.

Theoretically, it could take up to 24 hours for the faulty code to be restored and for the fix to be automatically propagated to consumer devices. If you use the business-friendly Group Policy Editor to manage Windows Update, you can configure the following special policies:

• Open Group Policy Editor > Local Computer Policy or Domain Policy.
• Go to Administrative Templates and find the KIR Group Policy and select the version of Windows you want to use.
• Set it to "Disabled".

Microsoft's Snipping Tool crashes on Windows 10

Earlier this month, Microsoft quietly updated its support documentation to acknowledge a critical bug in which the snipping tool "Snip & Sketch" would not launch on Windows 10.

Microsoft says it has received reports that the Snip & Sketch app may be unable to capture screenshots. In fact, it doesn't even open when using the keyboard shortcut (Windows key shift S).

Microsoft is investigating these reports and more details will be provided in the future, but the company is not aware of any workarounds at this time.
