Apple stops selling 5K LG UltraFine monitor after launching Studio Display

Following the release of the Apple Studio Display, the Apple Store has officially stopped selling the 5K LG UltraFine. It's unclear whether LG will stop making the model entirely, and the product is out of stock on LG's own website, though it's still currently on sale on Amazon. The eBay aftermarket seems to be pretty healthy, probably because people are offloading monitors in droves and first-party solutions are now available.

The Apple Studio Display uses almost the same panel that LG has used in its UltraFine 5K for years. It's also very similar to what Apple sells in the 27-inch iMac, another product discontinued at Apple Stores this week.

One small improvement to this panel is that the Studio Display is 600 nits brighter compared to the UltraFine's 500 nits.

What makes the Studio Display appealing is Apple's focus on build quality and overall design. Featuring an all-aluminum casing and stand, and available in silver and black accents, the monitor pairs perfectly with any of its Mac lineup, including the new Mac Studio.

The Studio Display also features a 12-megapixel ultrawide webcam that supports the company's Center Stage feature, which provides dynamic framing for video calls as people move around the room. It also has a six-speaker array with four woofers and two tweeters, as well as a three "studio-quality" microphone array.

Studio Display can connect to another Mac using a single Thunderbolt cable, providing up to 96 watts of display output and pass-through charging. The Studio Display also includes three 10Gbps USB-C ports, making it easy to plug in accessories.

Compared with Apple's products, LG UltraFine does have a little price advantage. It was selling for $1,300 before it was removed yesterday. The Studio Display starts at $1,599 and can be configured with a height-adjustable stand for an additional $400 and anti-reflective nano-textured glass for an additional $300.
