MSTeams.exe – Bad image error status code 0xc0000020 in Windows 11 [Fix]

Microsoft introduced something new with the release of the Windows 11 operating system. One of them is the chat icon on the taskbar along with the start and search buttons. Clicking this chat icon opens a chat window for the Microsoft Teams application directly on your system.

Some Windows users have reported that when they click on the chat icon on the taskbar, it throws an error window that says -

Step 6: Now select the Microsoft Teams app from the search results and click on the three horizontal dots to see more options.

Step 7: Then, select Advanced Options from the list as shown below.

Step 8: Scroll down the "Advanced Options" page to the "Reset" section and click the "Repair" button once to start repairing Microsoft Teams app.

Step 9: Now check if the problem still exists.

Fix 2 – Reinstall the Microsoft Teams app

Let’s see how to do this with the help of the steps explained below.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and type Installed Applications on your keyboard.

Step 2: Then select Installed ApplicationsSystem Settings from the search results as shown below.

Step 4: Once opened, find Microsoft Teams from the list of programs.

Step 5: Click on the three horizontal dots and then click on Uninstall.

Step 6: This will start uninstalling the Microsoft Teams app. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall process.

Step 7: After the uninstallation is complete, close the window.

Step 8: Now enter the File Explorer by pressing the Windows E keys simultaneously.

Step 9: Once File Explorer opens, go to View > Show > Hidden Items from the top menu bar as shown below.

Step 10: This will make all hidden items visible to the user.

Step 11: Now type C:\Program Files in the address bar of the File Explorer window and press Enter key.

Step 12: In the Programs Files folder, look for a folder named WindowsApps.

Step 13: You need to set ownership to Everyone first. To do this, right-click WindowsApps , and click Properties from the context menu.

Step 14: Go to the Security tab in the Properties window and click Advanced ".

Step 15: In the Advanced Security Settings window, click Change to change the owner of the folder.

Step 16: Enter Everyone in the text box available in the window and click Check Names.

Step 17: This will start checking the names entered and return an output showing each person populated in the text box as shown in the image.

Step 18: You need to click "OK" to make changes.

Step 19: Now you can see Owner has changed to Everyone and click on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects checkbox.

Step 20: Then click Apply.

Step 21: This will start applying ownership to all subcontainers and objects under the WindowsApps folder, which may take a while.

Step 22: Once completed, it will pop up a Windows security window. Click OK to close it.

Step 23: Now click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings window.

Step 24: Once closed, open the Advanced Security Settings window again by following the instructions in steps 13 and 14.

Step 25: Now click on Change Permissions as shown in the image below.

Step 26: Click Add for permission entry.

Step 27: Next, click Select a principal.

Step 28: In the Select User or Group window, type Everyone, and then click Check Names.

Step 29: This will generate an object name called "Everyone" in the text box, then click "OK".

Step 30: After adding the principal as owner, select Allow from the Type drop-down list and select Apply to the drop-down list to select this folder, subfolder and file options.

Step 31: Then, check all the checkboxes under Basic Permissions and click OK.

Step 32: Finally, you can see that the permission entry for “Everyone with Full Control” has been added and you can click “Apply".

This will take some time to apply. Please wait until then.

Step 33: Then click OK to close all open windows.

Step 34: Now Double click on the WindowsApps folder and search for all Microsoft Team folders similar to MicrosoftTeams_22196.1703.1462.9942_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe and delete.

Step 35: Close all windows and restart the system.

Step 36: After the system starts, click here to enter the download page of the Microsoft Teams website.

Step 37: Download the application and install it by double-clicking its installation file.

Step 38: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

Step 39: Once the installation is complete, check if clicking the chat icon still triggers any error messages.

Fix 3 – Fix Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime

Some users claimed that they were able to resolve this error by repairing the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime that was installed on their system. Therefore, we recommend our users to also try fixing the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime and see if this resolves the issue for you.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and type Installed Applications.

Step 2: Then press Enter key to open the Installed Applications page on your system.

Step 3: On the Installed page, search for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime by typing in the search bar.

Step 4: Next, click on the three horizontal dots of the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime and then click on Modify.

Step 5: This will open the repair window and start the repair after clicking on Repair as shown below.

Step 6: It will then start downloading and installing the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.

Fix 4 – Disable Microsoft Teams from Launch Application

Step 1: First, press the Windows D keys simultaneously to enter the desktop.

Step 2: Right-click somewhere in an empty space and click Personalize from its context menu as shown below.

Step 6: To disable Microsoft Teams from startup, open the Task Manager window by pressing the Ctrl Shift Esc key simultaneously.

Step 7: Click the Launch Appstab and search for Microsoft Teams from the list.

Step 8: Right-click on it and click Disable from the context menu as shown below.
