Hands-on: Windows 11's new search UI released, but accuracy issues remain

The new interface for Windows 11 Search is now available to everyone. The new interface comes with a feature called Search Highlights, designed to highlight fresh content like illustrations and facts or Bing’s trending topics.

Search highlights are powered by Bing, and they change frequently to help users learn new topics and discover popular items. For example, today is World Penguin Day, and Windows Search will display important facts about penguins. Likewise, the search will highlight moments such as holidays or other events around the world and in your area.

Microsoft says it wants to provide users with "rich, bold and interactive" content through Windows Search, and Search Highlights will be further enhanced in the coming months. The goal is to share fun illustrations from Bing that help you discover new facts, keep you connected and more productive.

Thankfully, search highlighting can be turned off from Windows Settings. When you turn off search highlighting (Bing Suggestions), Windows Search will show suggested apps, Bing's quick searches, and popular apps.

As you can see in the screenshots above and below, the search interface is evolving to be more like a Start menu, which makes finding something much more Easy and fast. For example, you can easily find apps on Search's homepage without having to search for them in the taskbar or Start.

Unfortunately, Windows 11 search still does not support the reverse search feature available on Windows 10.

Windows Search Accuracy Issues

Windows Search is not perfect, and it often fails to display the correct items in search results. For example, when a user searches for an app, the search displays results from the web and ignores local results. This proves that Bing integration isn’t always the best idea.

Microsoft officials have confirmed that the company is working on improving Windows Search, with one of the latest preview builds including additional fixes to speed up searches.

"Searching for apps and settings in the Windows Search box on the taskbar is now faster and more accurate than before," Microsoft said.

While there is no denying that search is now slightly better in the latest version, it is still buggy and sometimes it fails to provide accurate results relevant to search queries.
