iPhone 13 series leads global smartphone revenue to record high in 2021

Apple’s iPhone 13 series led global smartphone revenue to a new high of $448 billion in 2021.

Despite difficulties caused by parts shortages, smartphone revenue increased 7% year-on-year and 12% quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter of 2021. Apple's iPhone revenue is believed to have increased 35% year-on-year to $196 billion in 2021, its highest quarterly revenue ever. This enabled it to capture 44% of total global smartphone revenue that year.

In addition to leading global revenue to new highs, the success of the iPhone 13 series drove smartphone average selling prices to increase by 12% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2021. This is also helped by the widespread adoption of 5G, with devices supporting more than 40% of global smartphone shipments in 2021, up from just 18% in 2020.

The average selling price of the iPhone also increased 14% to $825 due to demand for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series. Apple has also increased market share through growth in key emerging markets such as India, Thailand, Vietnam and Brazil.

The top five smartphone brands contribute more than 85% of total smartphone revenue. Samsung smartphone revenue grew 11% year-on-year, while Xiaomi and Oppo grew 49% and 47% respectively.
