Smart city technology will become an important asset in urban decarbonization strategies to significantly reduce carbon emissions, according to a recent study by ABI Research.

Digital twins, IoT and AI are critical to achieving net-zero cities

“Technologies such as digital twins, smart streetlights, microgrids, computer vision, smart city management platforms and micromobility are all growing in popularity and contributing to decarbonization ," said Dominique Bonte, vice president of vertical and end markets at ABI Research.

The research firm cited several examples where these strategies have a direct impact on energy consumption and they also encourage citizens to make better choices to help decarbonize their cities.

One is London’s recently expanded ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone), which uses a variety of technologies such as ANPR (automatic number plate readers), CCTV cameras and environmental sensors to assess the impact of new regulations.

Another example is Singapore’s innovation district Tengah, which has deployed a variety of technologies to support decarbonization, including centralized cooling systems, smart streetlights, smart waste removal, mobile apps for citizen smart meters, and wireless Mass Rapid Transit Center in the city.

Bonte pointed out that the principles behind smart city technology, such as increased efficiency, better data management and better decision-making, are also critical to decarbonization and achieving net zero targets.

Technology can help through more efficient energy use, better project planning, predictive maintenance, greener mobility options such as e-bikes and e-scooters and through better data management, he added. to strengthen urban management to enhance decarbonization.

“Cities have a great opportunity to influence how we deliver our net zero goals through their ability to regulate, purchase and influence their services. By choosing smarter, more resilient solutions, they can deliver and Maintain their decarbonization targets to increase the health of their citizens and wider communities," Bonte said.
