IT jobs are quite hot right now. There will be plenty of job opportunities for programmers and software developers this year. However, interviews have become a stumbling block in the recruitment process and a nightmare for many programmers. Here are 8 tips that I hope will help you successfully win a programming interview.
1. Know how to write algorithms
If you are applying for a job as a software engineer, then obviously you need to know how to code. Writing code scripts is actually slightly different than writing algorithms to solve software problems. The employer may ask a question like, "Write an algorithm that can find an element from a linked list and move this element to the end of the list." So, you must know how to write an algorithm.
As long as you have a little knowledge of data structures and know how to implement different types of algorithms, writing algorithms should not be difficult for you. You can find many resources on this online. As long as you can successfully write how to sort an array, you can go for the interview.
2. Write code without tools
Most programmers are very accustomed to using tools - simulators, integrated development environments, frameworks, etc. - which can make our programming tasks easier. Java programmers prefer IntelliJ and Eclipse and don't like to use plug-ins. While Node.js developers don't need any IDE, they use text programming. IDEs are undoubtedly powerful, but when you go for an interview, the employer may ask you to write code without any tools. If you can practice without any frameworks and tools, you will definitely be able to write code easily during the interview.
3. Have experience
Programming experience can add value to your resume. Compared with some blank papers, employers prefer job seekers with relevant experience. If you don’t have any experience, don’t worry. Building mobile apps and publishing them to the app store; putting open source code on GitHub; promoting existing open source projects, etc. are all ways you can increase your experience.
4. Speak out your thinking process
After the interviewer asks questions, please speak out your thinking process loudly. No matter how awkward or unaccustomed you are, try to think about things this way. Whatever you think, say it. This can add points to your performance.
5. Don’t argue, blame and make excuses
Some interviewers are used to using arguments to prove their points. If you really don't know the answer to a question, just explain it briefly. There is no point in arguing. If you don’t know the specific question asked by the interviewer, don’t blame the interviewer for asking it in the wrong way, or blame the college professor for not teaching that part. These thoughts are very serious, please take responsibility for your actions.
6. Don’t give up
The interviewer will ask some difficult questions purposefully to test your ability to deal with difficult situations. If the interviewer asks you the most difficult question you've never heard of, don't give up easily. If you try your best, the employer will respect you more. No company wants its employees to always complain that the problem is difficult, even if it is indeed a particularly difficult problem to solve! So, don't give up and try to answer as best you can.
7. Test the code
No code is perfect. Pretend that your code has some bugs and test it before telling the interviewer that you have completed the code. As a programmer, it's important to test every line of code you write.
8. Feedback
When you build a product, you should also build connections with your customers and end users. Therefore, you can ask the interviewer for his or her opinion on your code. Some may think this is inconsequential, but the way you solicit feedback is very important in the interviewer's eyes. This shows your interest in learning and your ability to understand code.
