Dedicated Servers Explained in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
If going it alone in Ashenfall has lost its charm and you're ready to team up with friends in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, here's the good news—co-op play is supported! However, before you and your crew start mining ores and battling beasts together, it’s important to get familiar with how the game manages multiplayer sessions and what’s on the way.

Can You Host a Dedicated Server?
Not right now—but it’s in development.
According to the official in-game roadmap, Dedicated Servers are a planned future addition. At launch, Dragonwilds uses a host-based multiplayer system. This means one player creates a world session, and others join them. If the host disconnects or quits, the session ends for everyone.
While persistent, always-on servers aren’t available yet, they’re confirmed to be coming. Once implemented, dedicated servers will allow for uninterrupted, stable worlds that don’t rely on a single player staying online.
How Co-op Works Currently
Want to team up with friends? Follow these steps:
-
Link Your Epic Account to Steam
Multiplayer access requires an Epic Games account. This powers the game’s online functionality.- Sign in to your Epic account
- Navigate to Account Settings → Connections → Apps
- Connect your Steam account there
-
Create or Join a World
- Launch the game and click Play
- Select New World and set visibility to Friends or Public
- Choose a name (no spaces or special characters), add a password if desired, and toggle friendly fire on or off
-
Joining a Friend’s World
- From the main menu, go to Play → Public
- Enter the exact world name (it's case-sensitive) to locate it
- Input the password if one was set by the host
Modify an Existing Solo World
Already created a world for solo play? You can still switch it to public or friends-only access anytime through the world settings menu.
Key Details to Keep in Mind
- Player Cap: Maximum of 4 players per world at this time
- Epic Account Required: All online multiplayer—regardless of platform—needs an Epic account linked
- Offline Play: Fully functional without Epic, but limited to single-player only
- Ongoing Improvements: The developers are actively enhancing chat and multiplayer features, as outlined in the official roadmap
Final Thoughts
If your dream is to run a RuneScape: Dragonwilds server around the clock, you’ll need to be a little patient—dedicated servers aren’t live yet. For now, co-op is dependent on a host staying online, but it’s a solid setup for small groups who play together regularly and don’t mind the current limitations.
Once dedicated servers roll out, expect a major leap in flexibility and freedom for long-term world building and exploration. Until then, keep your connection stable, your inventory full, and—unless you enjoy betrayal—keep friendly fire turned off.
