Darkest Dungeon 2: Best Team Comp for Kingdoms

The Kingdoms mode in Darkest Dungeon 2 is even more challenging than the Confessions mode the game launched with, or at least at first. After all, you're starting out minus all the upgrades you're used to and haven't adjusted to the unique mechanics.

For example, Darkest Dungeon 2's Stress and HP healing isn't a thing at Inns anymore, which means when building your team comp, you'll want to prioritize those. Heroes like Runaway and Crusader can be a great idea as they're more self-sufficient than some others, allowing you to better survive your long Kingdoms journey.

Self-Sufficiency And Strong Starting Skills Are A Must

Apart from healing being more important than ever, the other key differences in Kingdoms are that heroes start out with a limited selection of skills, and Paths are expensive. As such, you'll want to focus on healing and also heroes that are strong out of the gate and treat anything extra they get as more of a bonus than anything else.

• Leper (Rank 1) - Not the hero you want, but the hero you need. Leper provides some pretty meaty and reliable damage, defense, healing, and the otherwise missing ingredient: corpse clear. He's vulnerable to shuffle, but Man-at-Arms and Runaway can help with this some.
• Man-at-Arms (Rank 2) - The man himself, MAA offers an extremely versatile and well-rounded package out of the gate. Stress healing, self-heal, disruption, defense, and resistant to shuffle thanks to his movement skills, he provides everything you could ask for right away.

• Plague Doctor (Rank 3) - Offers a no-cooldown heal and damage over time wipe, Bleed, combo and defense in one skill, and strong single target when you're not up against Blight-resistant Beastmen. Make it a point to upgrade to the Surgeon path when able.
• Runaway (Rank 4) - Similar to MAA, she offers a strong starting package. Self-heal and defense, group damage over time, combo and defense, and the ability to deal with annoying dodge and Stealth tokens en masse - she pretty much has it all. Don't rush it, but go for the Arsonist path when able.

Priority upgrades are marked with an asterisk*.

There is some flexibility with the Darkest Dungeon 2 skills and one of the Paths here. MAA wants Defender, so you can swap out Hold the Line if you're not in the Shroud or Bellow if you're not running into Riposte and Crit tokens (mostly found on Beastmen during Sieges). Alternately, you can forgo Command, though this will make Leper less consistent.

Rank 1 refers to the front (right) row while Rank 4 refers to the back (left) row.

Meanwhile, Plague Doctor can swap Disorienting Blast for Cause of Death. You'll lose out on some control, but Cause combos well with Firefly and adds some appreciable single target burst damage.

You can make a case for Tempest on Leper if you want more Chop damage at the expense of making Fatigue more of an issue. I can't recommend this given how oppressive Fatigue is in Kingdoms, and you'll usually, if not always, have something better to spend on. However, it could be worth experimenting with if you've gotten lots of mileage out of the stock team comp.

The primary weakness of this team is it doesn't target the backline much. This won't be an issue due to corpse removal, except when you encounter bosses like Dreaming General in The Tangle and The Librarian in The Sprawl. Take care to avoid these bosses at all costs.

A second, riskier take on this team comp is to swap Runaway with Occultist, then slot in Crusader where Leper sits. It's optional, but you'd be better off swapping Man-at-Arms and Crusader while you're at it. This team comp will sacrifice some of Runaway's utility and her reliable self-heal for more combo and more reliable damage upfront. Whether that's worth it is up to you, but especially early in your Darkest Dungeon 2 Kingdoms journey, I recommend playing it safe with the above list.
