Microsoft reminds everyone: It's time to move on from Windows 10
Windows 10 has been in use for nearly a decade and still holds the title of the most widely used Windows operating system today. Although Microsoft has already declared the end of support for Windows 10 and aggressively pushed notifications urging users to switch to Windows 11, it’s now intensifying its efforts.
Recently, Microsoft refreshed its official support page outlining the end-of-support timelines for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7. While the latter two have already reached their end-of-life, Windows 10 remains prevalent. For those who aren’t aware, official support for Windows 10 will end on October 16, 2025.
This updated support page thoroughly explains what the end of support entails and how it could affect users. It's a carefully designed resource that highlights the risks of continuing to use an unsupported OS, particularly in terms of security vulnerabilities. Windows Latest believes Microsoft may begin directing users to this document via end-of-support banners.
Microsoft is clearly pushing users toward upgrading to Windows 11—or purchasing a new device, ideally a Copilot PC. To support this goal, the support page now includes a dedicated section showcasing Windows 11’s key features.
As seen in the image below, this section draws comparisons between Windows 10 and 11, and even guides users on where to buy a new Windows PC. It also encourages the use of OneDrive to back up personal files and ensure data safety.
Once support ends, Windows 10 devices will no longer receive security patches or system updates, making them increasingly susceptible to malware and cyber threats. Feature updates will also cease. However, there is a workaround for organizations and individuals who aren’t ready to move on.
For loyal Windows 10 users, Microsoft offers the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which provides critical security fixes. However, this program does not include feature updates—even with the added cost of maintaining the OS.
The ESU pricing for businesses is steep:
- First year (starting October 16, 2025): $61 per device
- Second year: $122 per device
- Third year: $244 per device
Microsoft has not yet disclosed consumer pricing for the ESU program. However, the company previously informed Windows Latest that details regarding paid updates for personal users will be announced later this year.
So why are so many still sticking with Windows 10?
Not everyone can upgrade to Windows 11
A major barrier is hardware compatibility. Windows 11’s strict system requirements have rendered many older Windows 10 machines ineligible for upgrade.
Components such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and UEFI firmware are mandatory, and their absence prevents installation on numerous existing PCs.
While there are both unofficial and official methods to bypass these requirements—and performance on such devices is often acceptable—many users see no need to change when their current setup runs all necessary software smoothly. Others are dissatisfied with Windows 11’s reliability issues, heavy focus on AI features, and design choices like the fixed taskbar and inconsistent typography.
According to StatCounter, around 70% of Windows users are still running Windows 10, and this figure shows little sign of dropping quickly. Perhaps the arrival of new Copilot PCs will finally persuade the holdouts to make the leap.
