Sony Game Studios layoffs: Visual Arts and PS Studios Malaysia are affected

The gaming industry seems to usher in a new round of layoffs. This time, Sony's Visual Arts and PS Studios Malaysia became the hardest hit areas, with a wide range of layoffs reportedly.

Many of Visual Arts employees were told on March 7 that they would be fired, Kotaku reported. Some of these developers are allegedly involved in a cancelled online service game project at Bend Studios — and honestly, this may have been dodging a bullet given the recent performance of online service games.

At PS Studios Malaysia, things seem to be just as bad. Former senior project manager Johann Affendy Mahfoor confirmed on LinkedIn that he was also slashed, writing:

“The company has carried out a round of layoffs and unfortunately, I am no longer a member of the PS brand.”

He also mentioned that high-performance employees and core project members were not spared, which is obviously not a good strategy for long-term development.

Other former employees, Chris Clyde and Lewis Labram, also confirmed the news of their firing on LinkedIn. Meanwhile, Riot Games senior director of R&D, Abby LeMaster (who worked for Visual Arts), said the layoffs have affected many senior industry experts, and these experienced employees will be difficult to replace.

Sony has not commented on this yet, but it is clear that Visual Arts and PS Studios Malaysia (both studios have participated in the development of large PlayStation projects such as the "The Last of Us" remake) are facing huge shocks.
