Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin has invited his party cadre to attend the function to be organized at the Kalaivanar Arangam here on Sunday, August 18, for the release of the commemorative currency coin of Rs 100 face value with the image of M Karunanidhi embossed on it along with a slogan in Tamil: Long Live Tamil.
The coin will be released by Union Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh to mark the centenary of Karunanidhi, Stalin said in an epistle to his cadre on Friday.
Recalling Parliament passing a condolence resolution on the passing of Karunanidhi though he had never been a member of any of the two Houses, he said that he was recognized for his talents in politics, administration, arts, literature, cinema and journalism.
Stalin also said that a commemorative stamp was released for C N Annadurai in 1970 at the Madras University Centenary building with the then Governor Ujjal Singh and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi taking part in it. The image of Annadurai printed on the stamp was selected by Karunanidhi, he said, adding that it was the first postage stamp bearing Tamil letters.
To celebrate the centenary of Annadurai, the then President Pranab Mukerjee released a currency coin with a value of Rs five in 2009 and he had the privilege of taking part in the event as the Deputy Chief Minister of the State, Stalin recalled.
At the event, Stalin launched the website for Annadurai’s centenary and also released a book of ‘golden sayings' of the DMK founder, he said. As in the postage stamp, the currency coin too came out with the signature of Annadurai, he said.
