Bleak future predicted for Sony's VR headset

Although with restrictions, Sony PlayStation VR 2 is to be made available for the PC in August of this year. There are already over 200 VR titles available, including highlights such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil Village. Over 6,000 games will be added via the PC and Steam VR. Nevertheless, the future of the VR headset doesn't exactly look rosy.

The first indication that Sony's SVR 2 headsets will soon come to an end is that the technology giant has already discontinued production in the meantime, as sales figures have fallen short of expectations. Although over two million units have been sold since the launch, according to Bloomberg have fallen from quarter to quarter.

Another problem is that major studios such as Insomniac Games, who have developed successful titles for the Oculus Rift platform with Edge of Nowhere or The Unspoken, are not programming games for PlayStation VR 2. However, just how bleak the future of PSVR 2 actually looks has only recently been revealed by a report from Android Central.

According to the report, Sony has severely restricted the funding of VR games. Internal anonymous sources are said to have stated that only two PSVR 2 games are still in development. How long Sony will continue to produce the VR headset will probably depend on how well it is received by PC gamers from August. However, due to a lack of important functions such as HDR, headset vibration or eye tracking, it is doubtful that it will be very popular.
