I've turned on this feature on my phone, and it has prevented me from being interrupted by unknown callers while I'm working. It can easily be turned on by going into your phone's Settings and scrolling down to "Apps." From there you'll go to the "Phone" app where, in the menu, you can scroll down to the "Silence Unknown Callers" option, where you'll see a slider that'll let you turn this feature on and off.

This feature is great if you don't want to be distracted by spam callers. However, it is not best if you need to pick up calls for work, especially from any new clients. Later in this list, I will cover how to potentially work around this issue if you are interested in turning this feature on.

5 Leaving Callers on Mute After Answering

Another method to stop spam callers from calling your number is to make them not want to call you again. An approach to get you potentially placed on their "no call list" is by picking up their calls before muting your own microphone. As they begin talking, keep your phone on mute and let them attempt to talk with you until they choose to hang up. Sometimes this can take minutes to hours, but from my experience, these callers usually give up after two minutes.

Anecdotally speaking, this tends to stop the same caller from calling you back but it doesn't decrease the number of different callers you receive. It also does not work well with robocallers due to how it is not a human operating on the other end, meaning that you would have to end the call yourself. It can help you get rid of persistent spam calls from the same person or company, however.

4 Requesting All Unknown Callers to Send you a Voice Mail

This additional step can work alongside the first method, but if you would like to verify the authenticity of a number before picking up a call from them, you could request that all unknown callers send you a voicemail outlining their reason for calling you by recording your own instructive voicemail message. This request can easily weed out any lazy spam callers who'd not want to leave a voicemail, as well as help you be able to know who's trying to call you for non-malicious purposes.

In my personal voice mail, I request anyone who calls me for the first time to leave me a voice mail if I do not pick up their call, and it's decreased my number of unwanted callers. I still get some solicitous messages in my inbox, but it helps me easily know who to block without talking with them first.

3 Filtering Calls With an App

I have not tried out all of these myself, but there are apps you can install from the App Store that help you rule out known spam callers. Usually, these apps scan and identify incoming phone numbers to see if they have any suspicious activity or if they have reports on them online for being spam. If a number is flagged by their system, it will either block the number before they contact you, or warn you before they respond.

Many of these apps are not free, with some keeping your number in their databases that can be accessed by other users. I have not put my money where my mouth is and purchased any premium varieties, but from what I have experienced and from what I've heard from friends, Hiya and RoboKiller are two of the most efficient apps. Hiya is one of the cheaper apps that people have recommended. Meanwhile, RoboKiller goes the extra mile by sending spam callers to go into a call with their "Answer Bot," with the app even providing a recording of the spammer's interaction with the bot.

On top of this, you can get limited access to TrueCaller for free.

2 Adding My Number to the "Do Not Call" List

A more "official" way to prevent spam calls is by adding your phone number to your government's "Do Not Call" registry." This method depends on your country, as rules and qualifications are to be added depending on local regulations. Most places allow citizens to apply for free and will place either your address or number on their listings once you request it. This registry does not prevent all unwanted calls, but it does stop you from receiving calls from known telemarketers, as they'd be fined for contacting someone on the list. In the US, you can apply to the FTC's Do Not Call list.

Of course, this is to say that the federal mandate of the registry applies to the spam caller. Many spam callers from other countries look into these registries to find numbers that are currently active to call since the list's restrictions do not extend to international areas. It does slow down the number of calls you get locally, however.

1 Changing My Number

When all else fails and your number is getting bombarded with unknown calls with no end in sight, sometimes a change of phone number is necessary. This is the most extreme method of stopping unwanted calls and does require you to completely move everything from your phone. You will likely still receive spam with your new phone number, but sometimes starting fresh can get you some temporary peace from annoying interruptions.

Though I haven't had to do this yet, when the torrent of spam calls becomes too much it's something I've resigned myself to doing.
