I'm trying to follow this tutorial to enable remote access to MySQL. The question is, where should the
my.cnf
file be placed? I'm using Mac OS X Lion.

For Mac OS X Maverick, if MySQL is installed through Homebrew, its location is /usr/local/opt/mysql/my.cnf

This MySQL forum post says:

OS X provides sample configuration files at /usr/local/mysql/support-files/.

If you can't find them there, MySQL Workbench can create them for you with the following steps:

 1. Open a connection.
 2. Select the "Administration" tab in the left column, and then select "Options File" under "INSTANCE" in the menu.
 3. MySQL Workbench will search for my.cnf and if not found, it will create it for you.
