Teg sampingan dalam HTML digunakan terutamanya untuk memaparkan kandungan penting halaman web. Ia berfungsi sebagai penyerlah untuk memberi tumpuan kepada perkara utama dari halaman web. Teg ini dalam HTML juga digunakan untuk membuat pembahagian atau membuat partition untuk halaman web, tetapi ini digunakan untuk memfokuskan hanya pada kandungan utama halaman web. Ia digunakan untuk membuat reka bentuk halaman web lebih mudah, yang akan memberikan lebih kejelasan kepada dokumen HTML yang disertakan.
