Why hasnt Apple updated these products?

Last year was a busy one for Apple, with a lot of products that we haven't touched in a while.

This is not surprising. If you look beyond Apple's main products and into the world of accessories and traditional devices, you'll find that the company still sells a lot of products directly, but they seem to have fallen off the Christmas card list.

This fascinates me. So, I thought I would check out this list myself. This is my opinion.

iPod Touch

I had to double check, but you can still buy a brand new iPod touch from Apple—today.

Prices start at £199 for the 32GB version, rising to under £400 for the 256GB version. Nestled inside, you'll find the A10 chip in a device that hasn't been updated in nearly three years.

The current iPod touch looks a bit like the iPhone SE without the phone slot, and also adds some different colors. I doubt it's for kids who aren't old enough to have their first iPhone or anything... ugh.

oh.

That's the problem, isn't it? I can't think of a reason to buy an iPod touch outside of a junior audience. The fact that Apple removed the product landing page for the iPod touch during a website overhaul illustrates this point.

What I Want from the Update

If Apple does update the iPod touch, it will happily receive the full-screen treatment (yes, with a notch). This would at least modernize the look of things and make it a more attractive gaming device.

Will it be updated?

No. Its days are numbered.

Magic Mouse 2

I have been using the Magic Mouse 2 in the studio lately. But not by choice; it's just the only backup mouse I have to have for the Mac mini. All other trackpads are either used elsewhere or soldered into the MacBook's casing.

My experience with the Magic Mouse 2 has always ranged between barely enjoyable and extremely unusable. This is a very strange device.

The current version of Apple’s traditional mouse was launched in October 2015. It's the classic one-click event with the addition of a touch-sensitive shell that can be used for swipe gestures (very useful).

But the Magic Mouse 2 is famous for one thing: the way it charges. To charge it, you have to turn it upside down and plug a Lightning(er) cable into its base.

My Biggest Complaint With Apple

And, no, it’s not that stupid AirPods Max case

That looks absolutely ridiculous and renders the mouse completely unusable while charging. It's not even a case of design over functionality (although the charging port literally shouldn't be placed on the front edge of the mouse like every other wireless mouse on the planet) - because it just looks stupid. No designer would solve this problem, right? Apple has rightly blamed and ridiculed the Magic Mouse 2 for a long time.

What I Want from the Update

Well placed USB-C charging port and better ergonomics.

Will it be updated?

Won't. While it has been slightly updated with new colors to match the 24-inch M1 iMac, I think it will slip away as we move into a trackpad-only future.

Apple Pencil 2

The first Apple Pencil changed the rules of the game for many people. If you're an artist, casual doodler, or digital note-taker, this is a consumer stylus that finally makes sense.

But that’s not entirely true. The material it's made of is too slippery, it's too long, and it requires charging the Apple Pencil by plugging it into the iPad's Lightning port, which is almost as stupid as the Magic Mouse 2's charging method.

Thankfully, in October 2018, Apple introduced a shorter second-generation Apple Pencil equipped with a magnet and solved all of these problems. This is awesome. Why iPad mini is the ultimate note-taking device

Goodbye, traditional notebooks!

But now

is

more than three years old.

What I want to get out of the update

I don’t believe Apple needs to make too many changes to the Apple Pencil. Maybe introduce some funky new colors and some additional touch or click controls. But that’s scraping the barrel. This is truly one of those accessories that has been refined to near perfection.

Will it be updated?

One day, of course, but Apple knows it's hit a home run with its second-generation version. So why the rush?

High-end Mac mini

Now, at first glance, this is an odd inclusion in this list.

When Apple put the M1 chip into the Mac mini in November 2020, they made it the most powerful and capable Mac mini ever.

What I want from the next Mac mini

I'm letting Apple have free reign

But if you look back at the history of the Mac mini, there's always been a higher-end version Available for anyone who wants to maximize the performance of this little powerhouse. Alas, these configurations (previously powered by Intel processors) haven't been updated since 2018.

But I think we all know what to expect this year.

What do I want from the update

M1 Pro and M1 Max chips please, Tim. You can use whatever design you want as long as it takes into account the required thermal margin.

Will it be updated?

Yes. later this year.

AirPods Pro

Did you know that AirPods Pro launched in October 2019 and haven’t had an update since? This makes them nearly two and a half years old. This surprises me - they still feel much newer than this.

I think this is because they are so smart. In fact, they might be the most impressive products Apple has launched in the past few years.

not completely. They are also my most used Apple devices. Whether I’m talking, working out, listening to podcasts, or audiobooks, my AirPods Pro are always with me. Aside from the iPhone 13 mini, no other Apple device has played such an important role in my life.

What I want to get out of the update

There are rumors that the second-generation AirPods Pro will have a new design, but I’m not too concerned about that. The current design is almost perfect.

There are only two things I want from the next version. Better battery life (it's a bit too short at the moment) and support for lossless audio. The latter will have little noticeable impact on audio quality for most people, but I'd like to see Apple incorporate this technology into the next generation, as it would mark the beginning of something big for wireless audio.

I really hope Apple is working on this issue

This could be a very important year for AirPods (and audio in general)

Update?

Yes. I think we’ll see the next version arrive around the same time as the iPhone 14.
