It connects to the Internet through wifi or cellular data to realize video calls between two devices equipped with FaceTime. When initially released, FaceTime only worked over Wi-Fi because phone companies were concerned that video calls would consume too much bandwidth, resulting in slow network performance and high data usage charges; with the introduction of iOS 6 in 2012, this limitation was removed delete.

What does facetime call mean
Facetime call is a video calling software built into Apple's iOS and Mac OS X, which connects to the Internet through wifi or cellular data. Make a video call between two devices with FaceTime installed. It requires both parties to the call to have an Apple device with FaceTime installed, an Apple ID, and a 3G/4G/5G or Wi-Fi network that can access the Internet.
How does Facetime work?
Apple’s FaceTime app runs on Wi-Fi, so one major benefit it has over the regular Phone app is that it can make internet-based calls anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi connection toll-free number. You can use FaceTime at home, in a hotel, at a restaurant, or on any Wi-Fi hotspot without premium mobile service. In addition, since it supports Wi-Fi, it can be used not only on iPhone, but also on iPod touch, iPad and Mac.
However, FaceTime also works on cellular networks, so you can also use it outside the home with your device's mobile data plan.
The Basics: FaceTime Video Calls
One side of FaceTime is the video calling feature. FaceTime Video, launched with the iPhone 4 in 2010, uses the device's front-facing camera to show the caller to the recipient and vice versa.
FaceTime calls can be made between any two FaceTime-compatible devices, such as iPhone 8 to iPhone X, Mac to iPhone, or iPad to iPod touch. The devices do not need to be the same model or type.
For years, FaceTime only supported direct person-to-person video calls, but starting with iOS 12.1, you can use FaceTime to make group calls.
The Basics: FaceTime Audio Calls
While FaceTime Video has been around since 2010, it wasn’t until iOS 7 in 2013 that Apple released FaceTime Audio. Much like the video feature, this feature is audio only, so only your voice is transmitted during the call.
FaceTime Audio is especially useful for people who don’t have an unlimited calling plan because it uses data rather than minutes, meaning you can send messages to any other user of your Apple device as long as you have the data to back it up. Make "free" FaceTime calls.
However, FaceTime audio calls do use data, so if you have a limited data plan, you may choose to use FaceTime audio less frequently.
FaceTime system requirements
iOS version: iOS 4 or higher
Apple software: Mac OS X 10.6.6 or higher ( Comes with FaceTime App) (Free with most installations)
Devices: iPhone 4 and later, iPod touch 4th generation and later, iPad 2 and later, Mac with camera
Note: FaceTime does not work with older Apple devices like the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
FaceTime Compatibility
FaceTime works on Wi-Fi and cellular networks. When it was initially released, it only worked over Wi-Fi because phone companies were concerned that video calling would consume too much bandwidth, resulting in slow network performance and high data usage charges.
With the introduction of iOS 6 in 2012, this limitation was removed. FaceTime calls can and still do over 3G, 4G and 5G networks.
When it launched in June 2010, FaceTime was only available on iOS 4 running on the iPhone 4. Support was added for iPod touch in fall 2010, and for Mac in February 2010. iPad support was added in March (starting with iPad 2).
How to Make a FaceTime Call
Using FaceTime on your iOS device is easy. Just launch the FaceTime app (it's green, like a regular phone), select the contact you want to call, and choose audio or video.
You can also select a recipient from Contacts and then select the FaceTime icon below your phone or camera to start a call of either type.
There are a number of reasons why FaceTime might not be working when you try it, but you should check if it's not working, and the first thing to check is if it's actually enabled in Settings. Go to "Settings" > FaceTime and make sure the feature is turned on.
