Apple iPhone users with WhatsApp installed are being urged to update the app immediately after a critical security flaw was fixed that could have allowed hackers to extract sensitive data from targeted devices. In its monthly security report, WhatsApp detailed CVE-2025-55177: "Incomplete authorization of linked device synchronization messages in WhatsApp for iOS prior to v2.25.21.73, WhatsApp Business for iOS v2.25.21.78, and WhatsApp for Mac v2.25.21.78 could have allowed an unrelated user to trigger processing of content from an arbitrary URL on a target’s device. We assess that this vulnerability, in combination with an OS-level vulnerability on Apple platforms (CVE-2025-43300), may have been exploited in a sophisticated attack against specific targeted users."

The mention of active exploitation is alarming, suggesting that attackers may have already used these flaws. The exploit involves malicious links that appear harmless but deliver spyware or malware. Donncha Ó Cearbhaill from Amnesty International described the campaign on "X" as an "advanced spyware operation" targeting iPhones since May. He labeled the combined CVEs as enabling a "zero-click" attack—meaning no user interaction is needed for the device to be compromised.

According to Ó Cearbhaill, once triggered, the attack can "compromise your device and the data it contains, including messages." The identity of the group responsible remains unknown. Although WhatsApp specified the vulnerabilities affected iOS and macOS, there are concerns that Android devices might also be at risk.

iPhone owners may not welcome this news, but both WhatsApp and Meta recommend performing a full factory reset to remove any potential malware. Additionally, users should ensure they are running the latest iOS version and have updated WhatsApp from the App Store using this link. The minimum safe version is v2.25.21.73 or later.

For Android users, installing the most recent version of WhatsApp via the Play Store—accessible through this link—is recommended to guard against potential exploitation.

Ó Cearbhaill also advises enabling Lockdown Mode on iOS or Advanced Protection Mode on Android to reduce the risk of such attacks. Meta spokesperson Margarita Franklin noted the vulnerability was patched "a few weeks ago," and fewer than 200 users received direct notifications indicating possible compromise.

The message reads: "Our investigation indicates that a malicious message may have been sent to you through WhatsApp and combined with other vulnerabilities in your device’s operating system to compromise your device and the data it contains, including messages. While we don’t know with certainty that your device has been compromised, we want to let you know out of an abundance of caution so you can take steps to secure your device and information."

Users should take such alerts seriously. Earlier this year, WhatsApp helped dismantle a spyware campaign affecting around 90 individuals, including journalists and civil society members in Italy.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook (now Meta) in 2014 for over $21 billion at the time of closing.
