There are two ways to use a multimeter to detect the quality of a diode: resistance level: low resistance when forward biased, high resistance when reverse biased. Diode position: displays voltage drop when forward biased, displays open circuit when reverse biased.

How to measure the quality of a diode

How to detect the quality of the diode

Detection method:

  1. Use the resistance range of the multimeter
  • Step 1: Switch the multimeter range to electrical blocking (ohm range).
  • Step 2:Connect the two probes of the multimeter to the two pins of the diode.
  • Step 3: Observe the multimeter reading:

    • Forward bias: The positive probe is connected to the anode, and the negative probe When the needle is connected to the cathode, the multimeter will show a low resistance value (normally around a few hundred ohms).
    • Reverse bias: When the positive probe is connected to the cathode and the negative probe is connected to the anode, the multimeter will display a high resistance value (normally it is an open circuit or displays "1").
  1. Use diode gear (if available)
  • Step 4: Switch the multimeter to the diode position.
  • Step five:Repeat step two.
  • Step 6: Observe the multimeter display:

    • Normal diode: Displays forward voltage drop when forward biased (approximately 0.7V), displays "OL" (open circuit) when reverse biased.
    • Short-circuit diode: Displays low resistance value when biased forward and reversely.
    • Open circuit diode: Displays high resistance value when biased forward and reversely.

Note:

  • Check whether the diode pin is connected correctly before testing.
  • Different types of diodes may have different forward voltage drops.
  • Do not use excessive force during the detection process to avoid damaging the diode.
