Gin Gonic 网络服务器内存泄漏?

php editor Baicao discovered that there may be a memory leak problem when using the Gin Gonic web server. Memory leaks are a common bug that cause programs to occupy too many memory resources, ultimately affecting system stability and performance. For developers, it is crucial to detect and resolve memory leaks in a timely manner. In this article, we will explore the causes and solutions of memory leaks in the Gin Gonic network server, helping developers optimize code and improve system performance.

Question content

Description

I encountered a potential memory leak in the gin-gonic/gin web server. I tried to replicate the issue by creating a simple /health_check endpoint. The endpoint /health_check is hit every second. This issue causes an out-of-memory (OOM) condition when available Pod memory is exhausted. There are no other containers running in the Pod.

I also exposed pprof and prometheus metrics to understand the issue but couldn't find anything. I don't see any other listed issues reporting the same issue, so I'm hoping someone can help me isolate the issue.

I don't see any increase in heap or stack memory, but the process memory keeps increasing. I can see the increase using RSS and the corresponding memory block using pmap, but I can't trace why the memory isn't cleared or what the allocated memory is used for.

How to reproduce

Simple code example with relevant endpoints:

<code>package server

import (
    "fmt"
    "net/http"
    _ "net/http/pprof"

    "github.com/gin-gonic/gin"
    "github.com/prometheus/client_golang/prometheus/promhttp"
)

func setupRouter() *gin.Engine {
    router := gin.New()
    router.GET("/health_check", func(c *gin.Context) {
        c.String(http.StatusOK, "Hello World!")
    })
    router.GET("/debug/pprof", gin.WrapF(http.DefaultServeMux.ServeHTTP))
    router.GET("/debug/pprof/:pprofType", gin.WrapF(http.DefaultServeMux.ServeHTTP))
    router.GET("/metrics", func(c *gin.Context) {
        handler := promhttp.Handler()
        handler.ServeHTTP(c.Writer, c.Request)
    })

    return router
}

func Start() {
    router := setupRouter()
    err := router.Run(":8080")
    if err != nil {
        fmt.Printf("Error starting server: %v\n", err)
    }
}
</code>
Copy after login
<code>package main

import (
    "example.com/health-check/server"
)

func main() {
    server.Start()
}
</code>
Copy after login

Build command:

go build -ldflags="-s -w" -race -o health-check main.go
Copy after login

Pod resource limit:

  1. 64MiB memory
  2. 1 CPU

expect

I expect memory usage to remain consistent. Some fluctuations are acceptable, but I'd like the memory usage to stay mostly consistent and not run out of memory.

actual results

The pod crashed due to OOM increasing memory for approximately 90 minutes. Each spike in the graph below represents a Pod restart due to OOM.

environment

  • Go version: go1.21.1 linux/amd64
  • docker image: 1.21.1-bullseye
  • gin version (or commit reference): github.com/gin-gonic/gin v1.9.1
  • Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (Bulls Eye)
  • GOGC=10;GOMEMLIMIT=64MiB (Also tried using default, but same result)

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Solution

So I did some experiments to find out where the memory increases.

I tried testing without the -race build flag and the memory seems fine now. I don't see it increasing consistently on idle servers (only liveness, readiness probes, and metrics endpoints are available).

I'm not entirely sure why this is happening, or if this is expected, but I'll look into it more deeply and have temporarily removed the flag from our production deployments.

Share the memory trend after removing this flag (the build command is go build), the peak is the load test I am running, triggering 1M requests (100 in parallel at a time):

The following is the Pod memory usage:

The following is RSS:

The following is the heap and stack memory usage:

PS: I'm marking this as an answer for now, but please feel free to correct me, I'm still new to golang and many thanks for everyone's contributions. If I find anything contrary to this result I will update/delete this answer, thank you.
