Microsoft is bringing Google Photos-like AI features to the Photos app in Windows 11. The tech giant is testing a new feature that uses AI magic to blur, remove or replace backgrounds and save images in .png format. New AI features are rolling out to users who subscribe to the Windows Insider Canary channel.
Microsoft’s background removal tool in Photos is similar to the removal tool in the Paint app. It harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect human or animal objects, bodies or faces in the foreground.
You can access the new AI feature by opening a photo, clicking the Edit icon, and tapping the Background Removal icon. It then allows you to choose between three options - Blur, Delete, and Replace. You can also control the strength of the blur tool and change the brush size to easily blur parts of your image.
First The option "Blur" blurs the background after detecting the object. In this case, Microsoft's AI correctly identified the bird and blurred the background while keeping the foreground object in focus. You can adjust the intensity of the blur effect with the slider.
Below the blur bar, you'll also find the Brush Tool for manually selecting areas to blur or unblur.
The second option completely removes the background while preserving the foreground.
The third option replaces the background and allows you to apply a solid color shadow. You can select a color from the WinUI palette at the bottom and apply it to the image.
In our testing, we observed that the new AI tool in the Microsoft Photos app ran smoothly and provided better performance than the Paint app The program has more features.
You can download the updated version from the Microsoft Store to try out the new background tools in the Photos app. We discovered new AI features in Microsoft Photos version 2023.11110.8002.0, which is only available to testers in Canary.
We don’t see AI integration in production, beta, or dev channels.
