#Microsoft's error message, like most of the time, isn't very helpful because it's too generic to be of much use. It begins with the following statement: "Your OneDrive or profile may be temporarily blocked because it is experiencing an unusually large amount of traffic. In this case, the block will be removed after 24 hours"

Continue Down next is another sentence that lists other reasons why a temporary account may be suspended: "It may also be taken offline due to suspicious activity or violation of the Microsoft Service Agreement"

In other words, the error is showing because Microsoft An "unusual amount of traffic" was noted, either because of "suspicious activity," or because of a "violation of the Microsoft Services Agreement." Doesn't help much in figuring out why the error is being displayed. Reasons for locking an account range from activity that may be beyond the account owner's control to alleged violations of the Terms of Use. The latter range from sharing copyrighted files, spam and phishing to any other activity that Microsoft deems to be in violation of the terms.

It may also be triggered if someone else manages to gain access to the account, or hammer the account with a login attempt.

While some OneDrive users may be suspicious, others may have been hit by the message without warning or any clue as to why it was displayed.

Here's what happens when Microsoft locks your OneDrive account

  • You can no longer log in to your OneDrive account.
  • The OneDrive desktop app lacks any functionality that requires an online connection. Files available on the local system are still accessible, but any files hosted exclusively online are no longer accessible.
  • File synchronization, downloading or uploading is no longer possible.

Go through the list and ensure there are not any successful logins from unauthorized entities. Clicking expands the data set and information, including the reason for the login failure. One option available on the

page is that you can select "Protect your account" for each unsuccessful login or sync; this will tell Microsoft about this specific activity.

Fix 2: Wait 24 hours

The Microsoft OneDrive error message states that one reason for a temporary account ban is heavy traffic. According to Microsoft, the account's lock may be automatically lifted after 24 hours.

It's best to wait 24 hours to see if the account can be accessed again.

Microsoft will review the issue and may reinstate the account once the review is complete.

Protect OneDrive and files from temporary or permanent account lockout

There are some options available to OneDrive users to avoid any issues that a temporary account ban may cause:

  1. Always ensure important files are synced locally. You can right-click on any folder or file in File Explorer and select the "Always keep on this device" option. If you're running Windows 11, you'll need to select OneDrive and then select the Always keep option. This ensures that all files selected are always available locally.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication or passwordless authentication. This adds a second layer of authentication to any login attempt and immediately blocks most malicious actors. According to Microsoft, 99.9% of attacks are automatically blocked if two-factor authentication is enabled.
