We know that Meta Reality Labs has internally developed a number of VR headset prototypes to explore various optical display paths, such as dynamic zoom, high PPD, high HDR, thin and light holographic lenses, etc. Among them, the high HDR VR prototype Starburst has been displayed at SIGGRAPH 2022, and during SIGGRAPH 2023 in August this year, Meta plans to display a zoom VR head display prototype with retina-level resolution.

According to Qingting.com, retinal-level PPD is usually defined as the ability of the human eye to distinguish under normal vision conditions, which is approximately between 50-60PPD. The VR headset that Meta will display next is expected to have 56PPD and support dynamic vision adjustment (0-400° diopter) and zoom.

Judging from the 4 VR prototypes released by Reality Labs last year, the high-PPD version seems to be based on the Butterscotch prototype. It is characterized by being based on a customized lens module, which has high text readability and is comfortable enough for long-term reading. The dynamic zoom technology is based on the Half Dome series VR prototype, which previously used a mechanical zoom solution and was later upgraded to a liquid crystal lens solution. It is speculated that Meta will show a fused version of these two VR prototypes. It is worth noting that Yang Zhao and Douglas Lanman, the people behind the two VR prototypes, will participate in this SIGGRAPH demonstration.

In addition, judging from the picture, this zoomable VR prototype adopts a white and gray body design, and the sides can be flipped upward. It is suspected to be modified based on Quest 2.
