Following the release of iOS 16.1.2 on November 30, Apple has now stopped signing iOS 16.1 and iOS 16.1.1. iPhone and iPad users can no longer upgrade from the operating system to an older version after iOS 16.1.2 or later.

Apple no longer signs iOS 16.1 and iOS 16.1.1

iOS 16.1 was released in October with several new features and enhancements, such as iCloud shared photo library, iOS 16.1 for iPhone users Fitness, Live Activities, etc. iOS 16.1.1, released in November, fixed bugs and improved security.

Then, on November 30, Apple released iOS 16.1.2 to enhance iPhone 14’s crash detection capabilities and improve wireless carrier compatibility. This is the latest iOS version currently officially available to users.

Meanwhile, Apple is about to release iOS 16.2 to the public in the coming days. The update will add the new Freeform app, improvements to the Home app, a new always-on option for iPhone 14 Pro users, Apple Music Sing, and more.

Jailbroken iPhone and iPad users often revert to older versions of iOS. There's no sign yet that a jailbreak tool for iOS 16 is in the works. Restoring an Apple device to a previous version of iOS can also sometimes be helpful for users who encounter critical errors after upgrading to the latest version of iOS.

Downgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 15

Even if you can't easily revert to iOS 16.1, it's still possible to downgrade your device to a version above iOS 15. Apple is providing a security update to users using iOS 15.7.1 that is causing this to happen. If you want to downgrade your iPhone or iPad, you'll have to use a Mac or PC.

This is not the first time Apple has offered users the option to continue using older versions of iOS. Last year, once iOS 15 became available, users had the option to stay on iOS 14 for longer while Apple was still releasing security updates for it. However, the company removed this option a few months later.

It’s unclear how long iOS 15.7.1 will remain as an alternative to iOS 16.
