#Even as Microsoft continues to improve its own Bing Chat chatbot, it is reportedly trying to prevent would-be competitors from using the company's search data. That's according to a new report from Bloomberg (via The Verge ), which claims via unnamed sources that Microsoft has sent warnings to two search engines that harvest data from Bing.

The report does not identify specific search engines, but does say that Microsoft has told them that they may cancel their contracts and remove support for Bing search if they use its Bing API to power their own chatbots.

Bing has been Yahoo’s primary search engine source for more than a decade. However, Yahoo has yet to announce any chatbot features. DuckDuckGo does use the Bing API for some of its search data, recently announcing the generative AI program DuckAssist. However, the company did say that DuckAssist gets its answers from Wikipedia, which may allow them to avoid a dispute with Microsoft.

Neeva is another search service that gets data from Bing. In early 2023, it released NeevaAI, a search browser extension that provides answers to questions.

In a statement to Bloomberg, a Microsoft spokesperson said:

We are in constant contact with non-compliant partners as we continue to fully enforce our Terms. . . . We will continue to work with them directly and provide any information needed to find a way forward.

Overall interest in Bing has increased since Microsoft launched Bing Chat into public preview in February. It may not want competitors, especially those that may use the company's own data, to distract it from some of its attention.
