End of support only affects Home editions of Windows 10 version 20H2. Education, Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise editions of Windows 10 version 20H2 will continue to be supported until May 9, 2023.

Tip: Use the shortcut Windows-R to open the Run box, type winver and press Enter to display the current version of Windows on the screen. See a complete list of useful Windows tools like winver here.

System administrators have at least one upgrade option to ensure devices running Windows 10 version 20H2 are still supported:

  1. Upgrade to Windows 10 version 21H1 or Windows 10 version 21H2.
  2. Upgrade to Windows 11.

Upgrading to Windows 10

Windows 10 版本 20H2:家庭版和专业版将于 2022 年 5 月 10 日终止支持##Please note that Microsoft announced in early 2022 that Windows will be mandatory on 20H2 devices 10 version 21H2.

Upgrading to a newer version of Windows 10 is the direct path. It shouldn't be blocked because the system requirements are the same and because Microsoft doesn't list any upgrade blockers for those newer versions of Windows 10. Additionally, due to the minor nature of these updates, updates should be installed more like monthly cumulative updates rather than full feature update updates. Windows 10 versions 21H1 and 21H2 only introduce minor changes, which does mean users will encounter fewer issues after upgrading.

We recommend upgrading to Windows 10 version 21H2 now. The OS version has a longer support phase than Windows 10 version 21H1. Most systems running Windows 10 version 20H2 should see the upgrade in Windows Update when you open the tool.

    Select Start > Settings.
  1. Go to Update & Security.
  2. Click the Check for Updates button.
Upgrades should now be available. You may need to click the Download and Install button to start the process.

Recommendation: Back up your system's main drive and all important data before continuing. There's always the chance that something could go wrong, and having a backup on hand from which you can recover your data may be your last resort in certain situations. For this we use the free program Paragon Backup & Recovery, but you can use any other program with the same functionality.

Upgrading to Windows 11

Windows 10 版本 20H2:家庭版和专业版将于 2022 年 5 月 10 日终止支持

It may not be possible to upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update; this depends on the capabilities of the device and whether these meet Windows 11 system requirements. Windows 11 upgrades take longer to complete, and users may need some time to adjust their workflows to the new system. Changes can be undone, such as a moved Start menu button or a center-aligned taskbar, but some changes cannot be undone, such as moving the taskbar aside.

You can run Microsoft's PC Health Check tool to see if your PC is compatible with Windows 11, or use a third-party tool such as Windows 11 Check & Enable, Windows 11 Requirements Check Tool, or Win11SysCheck and WhyNotWin11.

If your PC is not compatible, you cannot install Windows 11 through Windows Update. There are methods, usually involving using third-party tools like Rufus to download and prepare Windows 11 installation media to bypass some of the requirements.
