'High-end' iPhone 14 front-facing camera costs three times more than Apple
Apple's Korean company LG Innotek is supplying the iPhone 14's front-facing camera along with Japan's Sharp. The company was said to have originally planned to switch the iPhone 15's front-facing camera to an LG one, but moved the plan forward to this year.

The change is attributed to Apple reclassifying the front-facing camera as a "high-end" component and supplier concerns over quality. The new front-facing camera is said to cost nearly three times as much as previous iPhone models.

The front camera of iPhone 14 will support autofocus for the first time. All four ‌iPhone 14‌ models, including ‌iPhone 14‌, ‌iPhone 14‌ Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, will feature an upgraded front-facing camera with autofocus and a wider ƒ/1.9 aperture.

A wider aperture will allow more light to pass through the lens and reach the front-facing camera sensor on iPhone 14 models, improving image quality. Kuo says these camera upgrades can provide better depth-of-field effects for portrait mode photos and videos, while autofocus can improve focus during FaceTime and Zoom video calls. By comparison, the front-facing cameras on all iPhone 13 models have a fixed focus and a smaller ƒ/2.2 aperture.

Now it’s said that LG Innotek is preparing to mass-produce the iPhone 14’s front-facing camera ahead of its release in September.
