It happened. Microsoft listened to user feedback and reports and resolved a long-standing issue with setting the default browser in Windows 11. Thanks to a newly released optional update ( KB5011563 ), you can now set your desired browser as your default browser, making it easier than the previously clunky process.

If you have upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11, you may have noticed that Microsoft has made it difficult to change the default browser in the new operating system. Not surprisingly, Microsoft Edge is the default handler for most file types or links you use in association with your web browser or common apps on Windows.

The company received a lot of criticism from Firefox (Mozilla) and Vivaldi vendors as a result. To bring some relief to users, the company took action last year.

Back in December 2021, in Windows 11 Dev Channel build 22509, it added a “Set Defaults” button for web browsers in Settings.

The good news today is that the option is now backported from Dev and available in Windows 11 build 22000.593.

How to set the default browser in Windows 11

  1. Click Start
  2. ClickSetup
  3. Single Click on Apps>Default Applications
  4. Scroll down to the browser of your choice (may be Chrome or Firefox or any other browser) click on it and Select "Set Default"

From now on, HTML, HTML files or links with HTTP and HTTPS will be opened in the web browser you applied above.

However, keep in mind that you still need to manually assign default applications for other file types such as PDF, XHTML, FTP, SVG, etc. as they will still be handled by Micorsoft Edge by default. Let’s hope Microsoft fixes this issue in a future Windows 11 update as well.

NOTE: At the time of writing, this is only possible if you have installed the new optional update KB5011563 (OS version 22000.593).
