Microsoft Edge surpasses Safari to become second most popular browser with 10% share

Microsoft Edge is now the second most popular desktop browser, with a market share of 10%. Chrome remains in first place with a 67% share, while Apple's Safari dropped to third place above Firefox. That's according to browser tracking company StatCounter.

The Chromium version of Edge was released in 2020, but Microsoft created the browser for Windows 10 in 2015 as the company's replacement for Internet Explorer. Although Microsoft Edge Legacy was heavily promoted on Windows 10 and included some interesting ideas like "put tabs aside" or tab previews, it just didn't work.

There are many reasons why the Windows 10 default browser fails. But a significant issue is the way the company has designed its ecosystem, including the lack of Edge plug-ins and browser updates tied to annual Windows 10 feature updates.

Microsoft killed Edge Legacy and replaced the old browser with Chromium-based Edge everywhere. With the release of Chromium Edge, the company continues to update it with new features. While these efforts may not be enough to convince Chrome's loyal user base, Edge has certainly taken market share away from its competitors.

Microsoft Edge becomes the second most popular desktop browser

In April 2021, Safari ranked second with a desktop browser market share of nearly 10%, and Edge ranked second with 7.96% third, while Firefox ranked fourth with 7.78%.

Microsoft Edge surpasses Safari to become second most popular browser with 10% share

According to an April 2022 market share report, Microsoft Edge now exceeds 10% of the browser market share. While Google Chrome lost 0.65 share, dropping coverage to 66.64%, Edge gained 0.42 points and now has 10.07% share.

Safari now trails Edge with 9.61% share, Firefox is at 7.86%, and Opera has dropped to 2.43%. Edge seems to be doing well in the desktop space, but nothing is happening in the mobile market where Chrome and Safari are the market leaders

Edge is not visible on mobile platforms, it doesn't even appear in StatCounter's top five in browser data.

While Edge continues to grow in the desktop market, it won't beat Chrome.

If you haven’t tried Chromium Edge yet, you should definitely give Microsoft’s browser a try. It has received some improvements over the past few months, and the sleep tag feature is now more efficient.
