This article explains through examples how to use php for concurrent task processing in the Linux environment, and how to use pipe for data synchronization between processes. Written relatively simply, as a memo.

PHP multi-process

Use the multi-process function through the pcntl_XXX series of functions. Note: pcntl_XXX can only run in the php CLI (command line) environment. In the web server environment, unpredictable results will occur, please use with caution!

PIPE

Pipelines are used to carry communication data between abbreviations. To facilitate understanding, a pipe can be compared to a file. Process A writes data to pipe P, and then process B reads data from pipe P. The pipeline operation API provided by PHP is basically the same as the API for operating files. Except that the posix_mkfifo function is used to create a pipeline, the read and write operations are the same as the file operation functions. Of course, you can directly use files to simulate pipelines, but then you won't be able to use the features of pipelines.

Zombie Process

When the child process ends, the parent process does not wait for it (by calling wait or waitpid), then all resources will not be released after the child process ends (a waste!), this kind of The process is called a zombie process, which stores relevant data when the child process ends. If there are too many zombie processes, it will occupy a lot of system resources (such as memory) and affect machine performance.
