ForbesNYT ‘Strands’ Clues For Friday, July 11: Today’s Spangram And Solutions (It Could Be Verse)By Kris Holt
How To Play Strands
The New York Times' Strands puzzle is a twist on the traditional word search. It's currently in beta, meaning it will only stay available if enough people play daily.
Each day offers a fresh Strands puzzle. You'll be given a six-by-eight grid of letters. Your goal is to locate a set of words that share a common theme, with a hint provided to help you identify that theme. When you uncover a theme-related word, it will stay highlighted in blue.
In addition to the theme words, you must also find a special word known as a spangram. This word explains what the other words have in common and stretches across the board from one side to the opposite. While the theme words won't be proper nouns, the spangram might be. Once found, the spangram will be highlighted in yellow.
Keep your wits about you.
"Some themes are fill-in-the-blank expressions. They could also represent steps in a process or items within the same category, such as synonyms or homophones," according to The New York Times. "Much like varying the difficulty of Wordle puzzles throughout the week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy]
Bennett intends to throw occasional curveballs at Strands players." What Is Today’s Strands Clue?
First, here’s the NYT clue followed by my own:
In the ballpark
My clue for you is:
Home run
What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
Now we move on to revealing the answers, starting with the spangram and then listing all the theme words. The spangram today is:
STADIUM
Here's how it looks on the puzzle:
The complete list of words includes:
- HELMET
- JUMBOTRON
- BULLPEN
- PEANUTS
- PITCHER
- GLOVE
Honestly, this feels like one of the least inspired Strands puzzles I’ve seen. The spangram is “stadium,” but even that feels loosely connected. While jumbotron and bullpen are specific stadium features, peanuts, glove, pitcher—those are just general baseball terms. Not your finest effort, Strands.
