Red Hat is giving developers free access to RHEL – here’s what you need to know

Red Hat has introduced a new self-service platform designed to provide easier access to its developer program.

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers initiative is intended to assist development teams in building, testing, and deploying applications faster and more effectively – all without additional charges, according to the company.

Gunnar Hellekson, vice president and general manager of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, emphasized that modern developers require the flexibility to work at their own speed to create innovative applications. He also noted that this must be achieved without creating bottlenecks with IT operations or production systems.

“Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers enables developers by giving them direct access to the leading enterprise Linux platform, bypassing centralized IT processes, and offering a more stable and dependable base that meets the business requirements for production readiness,” Hellekson stated.

This service provides streamlined access to the enterprise Linux platform, allowing up to 25 physical, virtual, or cloud-based instances per registered member of the Red Hat developer program.

Additionally, it offers curated and verified developer resources, including many of the latest open-source application development languages, tools, and databases, as mentioned by Red Hat.

Furthermore, the company highlighted that the platform will feature robust open-source container tools via Podman Desktop – Red Hat’s recommended container development solution.

According to Red Hat, this new service enhances existing developer offerings and includes a free Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals.

Red Hat emphasizes security improvements across developer workstations

The company pointed out that IT complexity is continuously rising, particularly as services integrate with AI, cloud-native, and virtualized environments.

This increasing complexity poses greater challenges for the cybersecurity sector, which is witnessing a steady rise not only in software vulnerabilities but also in software supply chain attacks.

The recent Red Hat Security Risk Report highlighted how this combination of issues and system complexity negatively affects both security teams and developers, exposing businesses to numerous risks and slowing down innovation.

For Red Hat, this highlights the need for a “secure, hardened, and uniform platform” across both production systems and developer workstations.
