The Galaxy Z Fold 7 Is a Bigger, Better Upgrade

Jul 10, 2025 pm 12:59 PM

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Z Fold 7, its newest book-style folding smartphone. This latest model is larger and more advanced than its predecessors, but it also comes with a higher price.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 retains the same general design as earlier versions, featuring a cover screen for use when folded and a large tablet-like inner display. Samsung has made improvements to reduce the phone’s thickness compared to past models. Now, it measures just 8.9 mm when folded, a significant reduction from the 12.1 mm thickness of the Fold 6. The device is also lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, weighing in at only 125 grams.

The external cover display has increased slightly in size, expanding from 6.3 inches to 6.5 inches. Meanwhile, the main screen has grown from 7.6 inches to 8 inches. Both screens continue to utilize premium AMOLED panels with up to a 120Hz variable refresh rate, ensuring smooth visuals whether you're gaming or scrolling through content.

The hinge mechanism has been redesigned to be both thinner and lighter. Samsung highlights that the use of “advanced armor aluminum” in the frame and hinge boosts durability by 10%. Additionally, the outer screen now features Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, the same material used on the Galaxy S25 Edge. These changes should enhance the phone's resilience, although it still falls short of non-folding phones in terms of water and dust resistance, maintaining an IP48 rating instead of reaching IP68.

Camera upgrades are also present. The Fold 7 includes a 200MP wide-angle lens that captures brighter images than before, though it lacks optical zoom. Instead, the 10MP telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom capability.

Feature Specifications
Main Display 8.0-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display, 2184 x 1968, 368ppi, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate
Cover Display 6.5-inch FHD Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display, 2520 x 1080, 21:9, 422ppi, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate
Dimensions Folded: 72.8 x 158.4 x 8.9mm

Unfolded: 143.2 x 158.4 x 4.2mm

Cameras 10MP F2.2 cover, 200MP F1.7 wide-angle, 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide, 10MP telephoto
Chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy
Memory 256 or 512 GB storage, 12GB RAM
Battery 4,400mAh with Fast Charging 2.0
Water Resistance IP48
Software Android 16 with One UI 8
Connectivity 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 runs Android 16 with Samsung’s custom One UI 8 layered on top. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, which is already featured in the Galaxy S25 series.

However, there is one notable omission: support for the S Pen stylus seems to have been removed. This feature had previously enhanced the device's productivity capabilities, and it's unclear whether Samsung eliminated it due to low demand or another technical reason. Combined with recent changes to the S Pen on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, this isn’t shaping up to be a great year for S Pen users.

In its official statement, Samsung said, “[the] Galaxy Z Fold 7 is crafted for those who want the everyday portability and intuitive feel of a traditional smartphone, combined with the enhanced power and flexibility of a larger, unfolded display — all in one device. With its ultra-thin and light design and wider cover display, Galaxy Z Fold7 delivers a seamless on-the-go experience that makes typing and browsing effortless when it is folded.”
