Building a RAG Pipeline for Hindi Documents with Indic LLMs

Namaste! I'm an Indian, and we experience four distinct seasons: winter, summer, monsoon, and autumn. But you know what I truly dread? Tax season!

This year, as always, I wrestled with India's income tax regulations and paperwork to maximize my legal savings. I devoured countless videos and documents – some in English, others in Hindi – searching for answers. With just 48 hours until the deadline, I realized I was out of time. I desperately wished for a quick, language-agnostic solution.

While Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) seemed ideal, most tutorials and models focused solely on English. Non-English content was largely ignored. That's when inspiration struck: I could build a RAG pipeline specifically for Indian content – one capable of answering questions using Hindi documents. And so, my project began!

Data Acquisition: Sourcing Hindi Tax Information

My journey started with data collection. I gathered Hindi income tax information from news articles and websites, including FAQs and unstructured text covering tax deduction sections, FAQs, and relevant forms. The initial URLs are:

Data Cleaning and Parsing

Web Scraping

I used markdown-crawler, a favorite library for web scraping. Install it using:

markdown-crawler parses websites into Markdown, storing them in .md files. We set max_depth to 0 to avoid crawling linked pages.

This saves the Markdown files to the incometax_documents folder.

Data Cleaning

A parser reads the Markdown files and separates them into sections. If your data is pre-processed, skip this.

The data is now cleaner and organized in passed_sections. Chunking might be needed for longer content to stay within embedding model token limits (512), but it's omitted here due to the relatively short sections. Refer to the notebook for chunking code.
