Samsung's Android 16 Update Should Have a Faster Rollout
Samsung Android 16 update is expected to be accelerated
Key points:
- Samsung has started internal testing of One UI 8 based on Android 16, aiming to avoid further delays.
- Samsung launched Android 16 tests ahead of schedule, with the goal of avoiding repeating the chaos and delays of Android 15 updates.
Samsung has been criticized for its slow update of Android 15. However, the company appears to be working to ensure that this will not happen again with the next major Android update.
After an unstable period of delays in One UI 7 update, Samsung has reportedly started internal testing of its next-generation major third-party skin, One UI 8, based on the upcoming Android 16. The news comes from a Twitter/X post by industry insider Tarun Vats, who reported that Samsung has launched internal testing of One UI 8 and has a built-in that will be Samsung's next major software update in the coming months. These tests are not publicly available, so if you are rushing to see if you can install Android 16 on your Galaxy S25, you won't be able to install it. These are just the initial work of the company to launch the next generation of Android.
It should be noted that Android 16 has entered the second beta stage and has begun to take shape - it is expected to be launched and entered into users' phones in a relatively short period of time. That's about two months ahead of Samsung's preparations for Android 15 last year. This timing is also consistent with the early beta phase of One UI 6, the last major update that fits Samsung's previous consistent schedule. If this seems "too early", remember that Android 16 itself is released earlier than previous versions of Android -- the first Android 16 developer preview was released last year, just a few weeks after the release of the Android 15 stable version. Therefore, seeing companies starting to lay the foundation for their Android 16 update at this time may be in line with the timing.
While the flagship Galaxy S25 series runs the One UI 7 full version (Samsung's improved version of Android 15), the experience on other devices is not ideal. The Galaxy S24 series has been beta testing since last year, and the latest folding screen devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, are also about to join the beta testing program.
Samsung has earned a reputation for relatively fast launch updates over the past few years—until a while ago, I was using the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, and I always received major updates a few weeks after the Pixel phone was released. So the fact that this update is so chaotic is quite unusual for Samsung recently. Samsung obviously doesn't want the same to happen on its next Android 16 version, so it's correcting the problem by starting a tougher work earlier than ever before.
We are not sure when this will translate into the versions that the user actually is available to – as we said before, these are just builds, which can be very unstable, so it will take a while to become something that the actual user is available to. However, if we started so early, we would at least have a chance to see the beta version starting with the initial release of Android 16 to Pixel phones and AOSP. Again, it's too early to judge now - Samsung may still have some problems in the next few weeks, resulting in another delay in release.
