The beginner’s guide to Substack’s new app

After seven months of exclusive release of Apple, the Substack mobile app finally logs to Android. Now both software ecosystems can use this newsletter platform to boast about “like your email inbox, but better” reading tools. We will leave you to judge whether the statement is accurate—we’re just here to show you.
How to use the Inbox of Substack App
There are four main tags in the Substack reader that can be accessed through the bottom bar: your inbox, discovery tags, your library, and your profile. Your inbox is on the far left and it will show new posts from all the authors you subscribe to. When you are in your inbox, viewing a search tag, or viewing your own profile, the bell icon in the upper right corner will notify you of any interaction with your comments or other Substack activities.
Click any post to read and a new bottom bar will appear. There, you can click the heart icon to like the article, click the voice bubble to comment, and click the share icon to share. On iOS you can also get a save icon (bookmark) to save posts later, while on Android you will get a save button (with lid box), roughly the same function. After reading, click the back arrow in the upper left corner to return to your inbox. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can swipe right to do the same, while Android users can do it by dashing on either side of the screen.
When reading, open the menu of the post by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen. There you can view the homepage of the publication (View publication ) and save the post (on Android you will find the Archive). Users using iPhones can also get an extra button to adjust the display settings . Speaking of saving articles to your in-app repository, you can swipe left to archive any posts in your inbox. If you view a publication, you can click on the three dots
in the upper right corner to share it and manage your subscription. That's all the features you can get if you're using an Android device, but if you're using an iPhone, you can also get an extra button to unsubscribe directly. Despite the Manage Subscriptions option, you can't actually manage your subscription in the app - it will take you to a web page in your device's default browser. Android users also suffer here: Subscription management URLs don't actually take you to the browser. Instead, you have to manually copy the URL and paste it into the browser's navigation bar. The Android app does provide a button to automatically copy the address, which...is OK. Click your Profile icon (looks like a person) to edit your profile, view your subscription, and view any posts you have written. You can access the main settings menu by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen. There, you can change your name, email, avatar, and profile by selecting Edit profile . You can also enable push notifications from this settings menu, but if you want to disable them, you need to open the iOS Settings app, find Substack, click Notifications, and select your Preferences. On Android, the Settings button next to Push Notifications will immediately bring you to your device's main notification menu. [Related: The Best Platform to Start Your Own Email Newsletter] Notifications area within the Substack app allows you to pause email notifications so you don't receive double notifications about new posts in the app and inbox. This setting is actually turned off by default, so you need to turn it on to keep the alert to a minimum. We have mentioned saving posts several times and you will find an archive of your saved items in the archive behind the library icon (which looks like an open book). This tab will also show your podcast, subscriptions, and anything you have archived, but you don't need to know more about it. However, if you want to unarchive a post for any reason, you can't do it. The magnifying glass icon on the bottom bar brings you to the Discovery tab. You can type anything in the search bar of this tab to find more newsletters, or scroll down to see what Substack decided to recommend this week. Below, the page also lists the topic categories you can browse. Click on any publication to see more information about it on its profile page, including its latest posts and those involved. If you like it, click Subscribe and you will join as a free subscriber. You will also receive a confirmation email with additional subscription options, such as paying to access the full post suite. The last option is Discover via Twitter, which involves linking your Twitter account to see what people on your network are reading and writing. To do this, you must provide your Twitter username or email, as well as your Twitter password. This will enable Substack Reader to view tweets on your timeline (including protected tweets); your lists and collections; your profile information and account settings; your email address; and you follow, mute and blocked accounts. If you want to turn off Substack's access to your tweets, open Twitter, click on your profile picture (on your mobile device) or More (on the web), and go to Settings and Privacy, Security and Account Access, Apps and Sessions, Connected Applications, select Substack, and select Revoke application permissions. Start stacking those subscriptions now. We're leaving now. Substack application settings You should know
