Styled partially as a dungeon crawler Metroidvania, Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana is delighted to let you delve into its dungeons and explore them as in-depth as you'd like. However, there is no escaping the boss at the end, and the powers you've gained in each dungeon are typically essential to victory.

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Gyalva Boss Guide

The Zone of Lava, which you are knocked into by Chester after the Illburn Ruins, features multiple bosses, though its most fearsome is its final one. Gyalva is a boss that can seem quite complex and confusing at first, so let's help you get them under wraps and defeated in no time.

Where Is Gyalva Fought?

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Gyalva Boss Guide

After defeating Chester in the Illburn Ruins, you are ultimately bested and sent to the very bottom of the ruins - the creatively named Zone of Lava. There are a few other bosses you fight here, including Guilen, though they are just an intermediary.

It is after you acquire the Ventus Bracelet and proceed to the final areas of the Zone of Lava that you will face Gyalva. They are a significant difficulty jump over Guilen, so make sure to save beforehand.

How To Defeat Gyalva

Gyalva's fight is a bit different from many others in the game. Rather than taking place in an isometric arena, it is a side-scrolling one instead. However, Gyalva still moves freely around as if they were in a 3D arena, making the perspective at times dizzying.

Overall, they're not obscenely difficult, though it can take some time to wrap your head around their attacks. First and foremost, you're going to want to be using the Ventus Bracelet a lot in this battle to be able to hit Gyalva in the air.

MP recharges automatically and quite quickly, so don't be afraid to spam magic whenever possible.

When the fight with Gyalva starts, they'll follow a relatively simple pattern, and it doesn't change too much either. They will fly about the area and position themselves wherever they want, and will then do one of two attacks - breathe a stream of fire, or shoot off a fireball.

The former has no other effects but has quite a wide reach, so just run away from it. The latter is more easily avoidable, though it also causes all the tiles on the floor to rise up. This can also deal damage if you're ill-placed, and even more if the tiles fall on you. However, it is also a great way of getting level with Gyalva and dealing some increased damage.

After some of their HP has been depleted, they will unlock another new move. This one also has them fly around the arena and stopping a distance away before they start swooping towards you. This move deals high damage and tries to track you. It also causes all the tiles to flip like the fireball, though causes the spikes to flip up, damaging you if you're standing on the tiles at all.

It is only the tiles adjacent to Gyalva that are flipped, though they are still very hard to avoid. There is one surefire method of staying safe though, and that's keeping to the farthest left and right of the arena. There is a small section on either end with no tiles, and Gyalva's swooping attack will never come close enough to reach you here, either. If you see them beginning to swoop, head to the far-left or right.

These edges do not keep you safe from the fireballs and fire breath though, so don't be overly reliant on them.

And that's about all there is to it. Once you understand how Gyalva manipulates the arena, they become immensely simpler to deal with. After they're defeated, you are given the Sunset Statue and can finally make your way out of the Zone of Lava.
