Where is My MySQL my.cnf Configuration File Located?

Locating the MySQL my.cnf Configuration File

Unlike the phpinfo() function for PHP, MySQL lacks an internal command to specifically locate the my.cnf configuration file. This is due to the file's potential existence in multiple default locations:

  • /etc/my.cnf
  • /etc/mysql/my.cnf
  • $MYSQL_HOME/my.cnf
  • [datadir]/my.cnf
  • ~/.my.cnf

MySQL loads these files in a cascading manner, with values overriding each other based on the listed order. Additionally, the --defaults-file parameter can override all default locations.

Despite this complexity, it is common for the my.cnf file to be found in /etc/my.cnf.

If you wish to simply view the configuration values, you can use the SHOW VARIABLES command (if you have the necessary permissions).

The mysql --help command also provides insights into the default file locations used for configuration:

Default options are read from the following files in the given order: /etc/my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.cnf ~/.my.cnf
Copy after login
