How Can I Generate a PDF from an HTML Div Using JavaScript and jsPDF?

Generate PDF from HTML in Div Using JavaScript

Problem

You have HTML code containing a div with an id of "pdf" that you want to print to a PDF file named "foobar.pdf" using JavaScript. However, jspdf only accepts string values and does not have a function to print HTML.

Solution

To enable jsPDF to print HTML, you need to include the following plugins in your project:

  • jspdf.plugin.from_html.js
  • jspdf.plugin.split_text_to_size.js
  • jspdf.plugin.standard_fonts_metrics.js

Additionally, if you want to ignore certain elements in the HTML, you can mark them with an ID and then use a special element handler in jsPDF to exclude those elements from printing. For example, the updated HTML code with an ignored element:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <body>
    <p>
Copy after login

JavaScript Code

This JavaScript code will generate a PDF with the content of the "pdf" div and open it in a new window:

var doc = new jsPDF();
var elementHandler = {
  '#ignorePDF': function (element, renderer) {
    return true;
  }
};
var source = window.document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0];
doc.fromHTML(source, 15, 15, {
  'width': 180,
  'elementHandlers': elementHandler
});

doc.output("dataurlnewwindow");
Copy after login

Notes

  • You can only use element IDs for exclusion in element handlers. Class selectors are not supported.
  • jsPDF ignores CSS styles, but it can format headings (h1, h2, etc.) and text within text nodes. Elements like textareas are not supported for printing.
