Why Can't I Connect to My MySQL Server?

Resolving MySQL Workbench Connection Issue: "Cannot Connect to Database Server"

When attempting to query a database within MySQL Workbench, users may encounter the error:

Cannot Connect to Database Server
Your connection attempt failed for user 'root' from your host to server at
127.0.0.1:3306:Can't connect to mysql server on '127.0.0.1'(10061)
Copy after login

To resolve this issue, consider the following checks as outlined in the error message:

  1. Ensure MySQL Server is Running: Verify that the MySQL service is running on the specified IP address (127.0.0.1).
  2. Check Port Configuration: Confirm that MySQL is running on port 3306, which is the default but can be modified.
  3. User Access Permissions: Grant the 'root' user permission to connect to the database from 127.0.0.1. MySQL permissions determine which clients can access the server and from which machines.
  4. Password Authentication: If required, provide the correct password for the 'root' user connecting from the host address.

In addition, a potential issue that emerged with Ubuntu 16.04 upgrades is that socket authentication may be enabled for the 'root' user by default when no password is set.

To resolve this specific issue:

  1. Log in to MySQL using socket authentication:
sudo mysql -u root
Copy after login
  1. Once logged in, execute the following command:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password BY 'password';
Copy after login

This will revert back to native password authentication, which is the default.

Remember to use the specified 'password' whenever MySQL prompts for credentials.
